Afcons Conducts Pile Load Tests for Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2

Over the past month, Afcons Infrastructure and Cimec Technologies have been conducting initial vertical pile load tests at at least six sites between Motera Stadium and GNLU for constructing Ahmedabad Metro’s 28.254 km Phase 2 project.

These tests are performed to find the ultimate load the pile foundation can support or bear when loaded. Results from it are used to validate the safe pile capacity considered for supporting the viaduct’s superstructure.

During the test, engineers typically transfer load to the pile using capacity jacks in small increments and maintain it for about two hours. During this time, the settlement of the pile is measured every 15 minutes using dial gauges on the surface of the pile.

Some information and snaps, shot this week, shared by Vasu Gupta:

  • Pile No: TP-06
  • Length of Pile: 25 m
  • Diameter of Pile: 1000 mm
  • Type of Pile: Bored cast in-situ
  • Design/Safe Load: 480 M
  • Factor of Loading: 2.5
  • Test Load: 1200 MT
  • Loading Type: Kentledge
  • Pressure Gauge LC: 20 kg/cm²
  • No. of Dial Gauges used: 4 Nos.
  • LC of Dial Gauges: 0.01 mm
  • No.of Jacks used: 4 Nos.
  • Capacity of Jack: 500 MT
  • Jacks Ram Diameter: 250 mm

Afcons was awarded Phase 2’s 14.36 km Package C1 in Q4 2020. Their scope includes the line’s 8.124 km elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU with 8 stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

It also includes the 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City with a bridge over Sabarmati River and 2 stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Rithala-Bawana-Narela metrolite have been cancelled by DMRC. Now they are developing it as a simple standard gauge metro line.

How did you come to know that??
Will the Red Line be extended or a separate line will be made??

Red line is broad gauge so it’s extension is out of the question. A separate line is going to be constructed since the old Alstom signalling system is suffering from legacy issues.

Since the planned route was mostly elevated for metrolite they thought it would be better for them to construct this as a metro route. Not going to affect project cost too much.
