Afcons Launches Kanpur Metro’s 500th U-Girder

Afcons Infrastructure last Friday celebrated the launch of their 500th U-girder for constructing the 8.728 km priority corridor of Kanpur Metro’s 23.785 km Line-1 between IIT Kanpur and Motijheel.

This is a significant milestone within the team’s plan to erect a total of 622 U-girders. The very first 25m U-girder weighing 147 MT was launched in August 2020. Since then:

  • 100th: October 2020 (67 days since 1st)
  • 200th: December (63 days since 100th)
  • 300th: February (57 days since 200th)
  • 400th: April (64 days since 300th)
  • 500th: June (62 days since 400th)
UPMRC, TYPSA-Italferr and Afcons’ teams with the 500th girder of the project placed for the depot-line near Geeta Nagar

Afcons Infrastructure is rapidly building this section’s civil structure (viaduct & stations) through a Rs 734.56 crore contract for Package KNPCC-02R awarded in September 2019.

The 9 stations on Kanpur’s Priority Corridor are located on NH34 (GT Road) at IIT Kanpur, Kalyanpur Railway Station, SPM Hospital, CSJM Kanpur University, Gurudev Chauraha, Geeta Nagar, Rawatpur Railway Station, Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital and Moti Jheel.

With this and other recent launches, UPMRCL claims a 7 km of contiguous viaduct is now ready within 312 days.

With a February 2022 commissioning deadline in mind, the next 8 months are going to be extremely busy for UPMRC and all contractor teams. In the middle of all that, the first of 39 Alstom’s 3-coach MOVIA trainsets is expected to arrive in town in October with UPMRC hoping to start trial runs in November.

Namma Metro(Bengaluru Metro) should learn something from Kanpur Metro. Look how Kanpur is completing everything within deadline and bengaluru metro, delays after delays after delays 😑😑😑😑.

Its altogether a different story in Bangalore . First we had bankrupt builders like Simplex and ILFS who ruined a branch of project , I still don’t understand how and why these default firms were awarded a contract could be a bribing which is unearthed at the moment. Now coming to other builders like ITD , LnT they are doing there best forme being responsible for Yellow line and Purple they are almost done with 90% of work but depot work is pending and again the delay was mainly from NICE, they challenged BMRCL over a land dispute for depot site which costed at least 2 years and one more challenge by forest department to hand over land to Kadugodi depot again going to cost another 2 to 3 years. Kanpur metro is just a fraction of BMRCL network so it shouldn’t create any ruckus in being implemented. Whatever post pandemic construction workers are back on BMRCL and rigs are roaring ….
