CMRL Cancels 6 Chennai Metro Phase 2 Underground Tenders

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) has in the past week cancelled six significant tenders of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project after failing to negotiate final contract values and scope.

The lowest bid received for each of these JICA-funded packages was significantly higher than CMRL’s estimate, and CMRL will re-invite bids again in the coming weeks. One of these is on Line-5 (Madhavaram – Sholinganallur) while the rest five are on Line-3 (Madhavaram – SIPCOT 2).

The six tenders and their lowest bidders were:

Brief Scope: Construction of underground stations at Kolathur, Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakam Sub-urban Station, Villivakam bus-terminus and Nathamuni with entry / exit, ventilation shafts, plumbing, earthmat, architectural finishes including signages etc. including twin bored tunnels from Kolathur retrieval shaft to Nathamuni launching shaft and ramps with U – section in corridor-5 of CMRL phase-II project

Following 5 packages are on Line-3 and strictly related to underground station construction work for 29 stations (21 complete / 8 partial) – see detailed scope & bid values for each here. Financial bids for all were opened in October 2021.

  • Package UG-01 (Madhavaram to Perambur) – Tata Projects was lowest bidder
  • Package UG-02 (Ayanavaram to Kellys) – DRA Infracon was lowest bidder
  • Package UG-03 (KMC to Royapettah) – L&T was lowest bidder
  • Package UG-04 (Radhakrishnan to Adyar Junction) – L&T was lowest bidder
  • Package UG-05 (Adyar Depot – Taramani Link Road Ramp) – L&T was lowest bidder

Per a source the 29 stations within these 5 packages will now be divided up into 8 smaller packages, but that remains to be seen. A list of Phase 2’s civil & system packages and their status can be viewed here.

    Hey TMRG ,

Please note the line 4 rolling stock tenders and line 3 elevated package 1 up to Sholinganallur has also been cancelled and re tenders have been called for in cmrl website

Yup, saw that! Line 3’s elevated package was cancelled even before they opened financial bids. I hear it was design related.

Not sure what went wrong with rolling stock package. That was also cancelled before financial bids were opened.

What’s wrong with CMRL why they are Cancelling many tenders. Also, Except L&T and HCC , many other firms are not interested in Working with CMRL ,why so?

There is no clear indications for the perambur market station as whether it is to be on Madhavaram high road or it’s moved from there to residential area Ramana nagar .
Please update on the same .As this confusion is prevailing for a long time

If Ramana Nagar station comes footfalls will be very less. If Madhavaram high road due to shopping center footfalls will be more.

Chennaites are not using the metro that much. Is it because they have good suburban rail services and city bus shuttles??

Traditionally EmU services working well. Plus those coffee and Vendors you miss in metro. Further metro passenger s are Grim mostly not so relaxed like Emu.

Yes. It’s true. But planning is done with future requirements in mind. Population and private vehicles density will increase exponentially (similar to Bangalore) and this will force people to “Park & Ride”

Not a Chennaiite, but whenever I visit Chennai I see high ridership (especially on the green line). Just my observations, but I think it’s successful so far, the routes are definitely more scientific than Bengaluru’s routes.

Nobody wants to travel from Baiyyappanahalli to Kengeri for god’s sake

Really bad tambaram being such a transportation hub doesn’t have a metro station…

I don’t know why it was so hard to not connect tambaram from airport

One good way to decongest GST road is metro upto mahindra city and stop all college and company buses
