Agra Metro Underground Line’s Construction Begins at Agra Fort

Afcons – SAM India JV on Monday officially started construction work for Agra Metro’s 7.93 km underground tunnel section (AGCC-02) connecting RBS College Ramp and Taj Mahal Ramp.

This development comes a month after the Afcons – SAM Consortium was awarded the 29.40 km Agra Metro Phase 1 project’s Rs. 1819.79 crore contract by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) with a 48 month deadline.

Over the past month, Afcons – SAM began mobilizing men and machinery, and sub-contracted geotechnical investigation work to CEG Test House to perform standard penetration tests (SPT) for approximately 65 boreholes.

This underground package of the 14.25 km Line-1 will connect RBS College Ramp and Taj Mahal Ramp via twin tunnels through 7 cut & cover stations at Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Jama Masjid, SN Medical College, Agra College, Raja ki Mandi and RBS College.

Site development works at Agra Fort Station’s site started this earlier month. On April 17, a rebar-cutting machine was inaugurated:

…and construction work was formally inaugurated on Monday by UPMRC’s MD. After constructing a guide-wall, diaphragm wall (D-wall) rebar panels will be lowered and concreted to form the station box.

Afcons – SAM will be deploying four tunnel boring machines (TBMs). I hear 2 of those will be Robbins machines from ITD’s Jaipur Metro project and another 2 will be Herenknecht machines from Bangalore Metro’s RT-01 Phase 2 project.

Good news. How much time the whole construction will take? 4 years?

4 years is the completion period, but Afcons-SAM likely has a shorter internal deadline. I haven’t heard/read of any major issues yet, so should be smooth sailing for now.
