NCC Launches Patna Metro Phase 1’s 1st U-Girder in Bhootnath

NCC Ltd. last week erected their first 27.90m U-Girder for constructing Patna Metro Phase 1’s 6.107 km Priority Corridor connecting Malahi Pakri – New ISBT.

The milestone was recorded between piers P-103 and P-104 near Bhootnath Station, and eventually a total of 310 girders will be launched to build Package PC-01’s viaduct.

The firm had began casting these roughly 165 ton girders in August 2022 at their casting yard located along NH-31 in Khaspur which consists of two 146m long casting beds from where 10 U-girders can be cast at the same time.

NCC was awarded Package PC-01’s Rs 552.93 crore contract by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in September 2020 with a tight 30 month deadline.

Their scope includes building this 6.107 km section’s viaduct and 5 elevated stations at Malahi Pakri, Khemni Chak, Bhoothnath, Zero Mile and New ISBT. It also includes a viaduct leading to the New ISBT Depot, as well as a small rake-interchange viaduct at Khemni Chak connecting to the 16.85 km Line-1.

As shared in the past – this section of Patna Metro’s Phase 1 is running terribly behind schedule with NCC recording this milestone in 28 months from the award of contract. In comparison, JMC Projects working on Kanpur Metro’s 2nd elevated section last week recorded this milestone in just 7 months.

To add – construction on Agra Metro’s Phase 1 had commenced at the same time in December 2020 and they’re on track for starting trial runs later this year – see viaduct and station images. The way things are going, at this time Patna won’t reach that stage until at least 2025.
