7 Bidders for Belagavi Airport’s New Terminal Contract

Seven firms have submitted bids for the civil construction work of a new terminal building at Belagavi Airport, also known as Belgaum Airport, in Belagavi, Karnataka after Airports Authority of India (AAI) opened technical bids on Friday.

Belagavi Airport’s existing domestic terminal has a built-up area of 3,600 sq.m and is capable of handling 300 peak-hour passengers. Its apron can handle 6 narrow-body aircrafts (eg. B737, A320).

The new terminal equipped with 4 aerobridges will boost the airport’s handling capacity to 2400 peak hour passengers (1200 Arrival pax + 1200 Departure pax). After it becomes operational, the existing terminal will be repurposed to manage arrivals. Per AAI’s consultant Landrum and Brown, this will enable the airport to handle a traffic demand of 2.0 million passengers per annum (mppa) up to 2037.

AAI had invited tenders for the project’s civil construction contract in November 2023 with a Rs. 265.04 crore estimate and 2 year completion deadline.

Bidders

  • BG Shirke Construction Technology Pvt. Ltd.
  • CS Construction Company Ltd.
  • Girdharilal Constructions Pvt. Ltd.
  • Harsh Construction Pvt. Ltd.
  • KMV Pvt. Ltd.
  • KPC Projects Pvt. Ltd.
  • Renaatus Projects Pvt. Ltd.

AAI’s Brief Scope: Construction of New Domestic Terminal Building and miscellaneous works at Belagavi Airport

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.

I haven’t seen any design renderings of the new terminal building – either online or in tender documents. Per AAI, the building architecture will have a local context with reference to its geography, landmarks, culture, art and architecture.

Here’s a schematic of the airport’s masterplan prepared by Design Accord Consultants via AAI’s tender documents:

If things align on the tendering side, then we should see a contractor getting assigned by the end of Q1 2024, basic ground work starting in Q2 2024 and full-fledged construction work starting in Q3 2024.

AAI has a couple active tenders for the construction of new terminals which I’m actively tracking. Here’s a list with the current technical bid opening date:

  • Darbhanga Airport – January 25, 2024
  • Varanasi Airport – January 31, 2024
  • Agra Airport – February 2, 2024
  • Hisar Airport – February 6, 2024
