Meerut Metro’s First Alstom Train Rolls Out in Gujarat
Alstom Transport on Friday rolled out their first 3-coach train-set for Meerut Metro‘s 25 km Line-1 (Partapur – Modipuram) which is under construction as part of the 82.5 km Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut RRTS project.
The train from Alstom’s Adessia commuter family of trains was designed at Alstom’s Hyderabad Engineering Centre, and manufactured in Maneja, Gujarat (systems & electrical) and in Savli, Gujarat – the location of the event.
The aerodynamic train has a stainless steel body with a design speed of 135 kmph. It is planned to be operated at a speed of 120 kmph which will make it the fastest metro train in India.
Meerut Metro’s rolling stock, comprising of 10 trains, is being manufactured by Alstom as part of a Rs. 2577 crore contract awarded to Bombardier by National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) in mid-2021.
Alstom will supply NCRTC with a total of 210 standard gauge aerodynamic lightweight coaches – 180 for long distance RRTS and 30 for local Meerut Metro MRTS services. The first 6-coach RRTS train had rolled out in May 2022, and last heard NCRTC had received 16 train-sets out of 30.
Meerut Metro’s primary goal is to act as a feeder to the Delhi – Meerut RRTS line via three stations at Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, Modipuram.
Per Alstom’s press release, the MRTS trains:
- Resemble the appearance of conformist metro trains
- Present a mix of longitudinal and lateral cushioned seating
- Offer a range of passenger-centric amenities, including overhead luggage racks, miniature screens within the coaches, wi-fi connectivity, and multiple USB sockets near the seats
- Feature designated wheelchair spaces for individuals with disabilities and stretcher space for emergency medical transfers. Emergency communication capabilities are also integrated into the coaches, designed, and manufactured in alignment with International Safety Standards

The sleek train design is nice, but this is easily the ugliest color scheme I’ve seen on any train-set. The blue and orange come from NCRTC’s logo and should have been enough, but that garish yellow on the front and doors looks atrocious. Delhi Metro’s RS1 coaches by Mitsubishi – MELCO – BEML JV went from blue to black, and I hope a correction happens here too.

Personally, I like it!
I’m happy that the design is significantly different than the RRTS rolling stock – and hence it would not confuse commuters. The garish yellow is the most significant differentiator there.

I just want to see this Meerut Metro train running at the speed of 120 kmph which will inspire other metros across the country to increase the speed of their rolling stock to 100 kmph +. Currently, all not metros even achieve a speed of 90 kmph. Only some do like Mumbai Metro Line 1 (Blue Line).
Probably the best looking metro train set in India IMO..
