CMRS Inspects Agra Metro’s Priority Corridor for Starting Operations

The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) this week completed a two-day final safety inspection of Agra Metro Phase 1 project’s 5.2 km Priority Corridor connecting Jama Masjid – Taj East Gate.

Agra Metro’s Priority Corridor was built in record time with a mix of 3 elevated stations (Fatehabad Road, Basai & Taj East Gate) and 3 underground stations (Jama Masjid / Mankameshwar Mandir, Agra Fort & Taj Mahal).

The CMRS’ statutory inspection on Tuesday and Wednesday involved assessing all six stations’ passenger amenities, safety & control room facilities, and a motor trolley inspection of critical systems such as tracks installed by Larsen & Toubro. The inspection ended with a speed trial run in which one of Agra Metro’s 3-coach Alstom trains clocked a maximum speed of 90 kmph.

Sam India Builtwell had started construction on the line’s 2.4 km elevated package AGCC-01 (Taj Mahal Ramp – Taj East Gate) in December 2020, and Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) started trial runs on its viaduct in July 2023.

Afcons Infrastructure – Sam India JV had started construction in April 2022 on its 2.8 km underground section (Jama Masjid – Taj Mahal Ramp) which forms a portion of 7.93 km package AGCC-02. UPMRC started trial runs through its tunnels in December 2023 – barely 20 months later.

I hear the CMRS’ team has already submitted their approval letter to UPMRC. Approvals from the CMRS are always conditional in nature, so we’ll have to wait and see what conditions are laid out for UPMRC to rectify before the start of operations, how quickly remediation work is performed and a compliance report is sent back to the CMRS.

When the Priority Corridor becomes operational in the coming weeks, it will make Agra Metro India’s 17th metro system to go live – see a list & quick snapshot of all systems over here.

Here are some snaps of Taj Mahal Station’s concourse & platform levels shared by follower Vishnu Kumar Chaudhary:

Why don’t tier 2-3 metros don’t have PSDs, is it because of low expected ridership? Or cost cutting?

    Dear sir,

3 elevated stations are Taj east gate, Basai & Fatehabad road and 3 underground stations are Tajmahal, Agra Fort & Mankameshwar station (Jama masjid).

But in the 1st para you have written the elevated stations name as underground station and vice versa. Please correct it.

    Thank you.
