TBM Tatya Records Kanpur Metro KNPCC-05’s Final Tunnel Breakthrough

Historic day! Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV on Wednesday celebrated tunnel boring machine (TBM) Tatya (S92)’s final breakthrough at Chunniganj Station of the 32.4 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project.

This was TBM S92’s fourth and final tunnel breakthrough, and marks the completion of tunneling activities (8 breakthroughs) planned on the project’s 3.619 km Package KNPCC-05 connecting MacRobertganj Ramp – Nayaganj Station.

Tatya – a 6.52m diameter and 120m long Terratec TBM was deployed to build a portion of the down-line tunnel of Kanpur’s 23.785 km Line-1 (IIT Kanpur – Naubasta). Here’s a list of all drives completed by TBM Tatya:

  • Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj (1025m) – January 2023
  • Chunniganj to Naveen Market (728m) – July 2023
  • Naveen Market to Bada Chauraha (510m) – October 2023
  • MacRobertganj to Chunniganj (420m) – March 2024 (this post!)

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had awarded Gulermak – Sam India with Package KNPCC-05’s construction contract in March 2021 with a 36 month deadline.

Besides constructing twin tunnels, they’ll be building 4 stations at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj, each 215m long.

TBM Tatya’s sister machine, TBM Nana, working on the up-line had arrived at Chunniganj Station last month. With Tatya’s breakthrough squared away, Line-1’s twin tunnels have been built all the way from MacRobertganj Ramp to Nayaganj – a distance of roughly 3.6 km including 3 cut & cover station boxes.

Both Nana and Tatya might get deployed for tunneling again in early 2025 at Kanpur Metro Line-2’s underground Package KNPCC-11 which was awarded to Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. – Gulermak JV in December 2023. A follower mentioned Herrenknecht machines are to be used, so we’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Kanpur now has just 2 TBMs working on Line-1’s Package KNPCC-06 (Nayaganj Station – Transport Nagar Ramp) – TBM Azad (S-640B) and TBM Vidyarthi (S-639B). Both are currently on their way from Kanpur Central to Nayaganj, and will cover a distance of roughly 1250 meters for their first assignment.

    The Tender was awarded on 9.03.2021 with deadline of 36 months. It’s march 2024 already and still finishing works are remaining. Is there going to be some sort of penalty on sam/gulermak or does it simply work this way. Or is it just cos of government/UPMRC babus?
