Afcons Begins Jaipur Metro Phase 1C’s Construction Work

Afcons Infrastructure this weekend officially started underground construction work on Package UG-03 of Jaipur Metro’s new 3.41 km Phase 1C connecting Badi Chaupar to Transport Nagar.

This brand new phase will extend Jaipur Metro’s operational 11.98 km km Pink Line (Mansaravor – Badi Chaupar) eastward to Transport Nagar. 2.65 km of its route will be built underground via twin tunnels through the old city with 1 new station at Ramganj Chaupar, while 0.76 km will be built elevated with 1 new station at Transport Nagar.

Afcons this weekend deployed a trench cutter machine near Galta Gate to start grabbing and trenching works to construct the diaphragm wall (D-wall) for its tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch shaft. This site on NH-248 (view on Google Maps) will consist of a cut & cover tunnel, TBM Launch Shaft and ramp leading to the elevated Transport Nagar Station.

Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) had awarded Afcons Infrastructure with Phase 1C’s Rs. 630.45 crore contract in September 2023.

Afcons scope includes construction of twin tunnels, an underground station at Ramganj Chaupar, a cut and cover tunnel box and underground ramp from Badi Chaupar Station (Ch: 10387.860) to the underground ramp’s end (Ch: 13040).

Here’s my go-to video to demonstrate how D-walls are built to form the boundary wall of station boxes and cut & cover tunnels:

Afcons will be required to deploy two new tunnel boring machines (TBMs). I hear they will re-deploy one Terratec and one Herrenknecht machine from the Agra Metro project where they’ve got 4 machines currently tunneling between RBS Ramp & Mankameshwar Station. If that’s correct, then TBM S115 and TBM S-718C will be the ones to go to Jaipur as the other two have been supplied by Robbins.

I see tunneling work starting no sooner than Q3 2025 and this underground section opening up for commercial operations no sooner than 2028.

I believe jaipur metro definitely has the ability to attract good ridership and it’s currently unfair to judge them based on a mere 11 km operational network.
