ADB Approves Nagpur Metro Phase 2’s $200mn Loan

The Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s updated website indicates the bank in July-end approved a USD 200 Million (approximately Rs. 1678 crore) loan for 43.8 km Nagpur Metro Phase 2 project.

Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2 project by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL or Maha-Metro) is already under construction and will extend the two existing lines built in Phase 1 to Kanhan in the north, Butibori MIDC in the south, Transport Nagar (Kapsi) in the east and Hingna in the west.

It comprises of a 1.2 km at-grade section with 2 stations and a combined 42.6 km of elevated sections with 30 stations.

Loan Implementation Arrangement

• Implementation Period: August 2024–April 2029
• Estimated Completion Date: 31 October 2028
• Estimated Loan Closing Date: 30 April 2029

Per ADB, metro stations will be equipped with modern safety and security technology, and designed to meet the needs of women, students, and people with disabilities.

ADB will support the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) improve the connection of the metro rail stations to the city’s transport services such as buses, e-rickshaws, e-scooters, and bicycles. It will support the promotion of nonmotorized transportation and provide last-mile connectivity to the outskirts of Nagpur.

Nagpur Metro’s Phase 2 is estimated to cost USD 912.81 million (approximately Rs. 7658.72 crore) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) is currently evaluating another loan of €210.72 million (approx. Rs. 1943 crore).

ADB’s loan will be utilized for civil works, power supply, traction, station utilities, and equipment. Two of those contracts are under technical evaluation:

• Package TR-02: 25 kV overhead equipment (OHE) electrification – 5 bids submitted in June 2024
• Package TR-03: 33 kV cable network, ASS, RSS & SCADA system – 6 bids submitted in August 2024

While bidding is underway for two contracts:

• Package TL-01: Design, Supply, Installation, Testing & Commissioning of Telecommunication System for Nagpur Metro Rail Project Phase 2 (current bid opening: September 2)
• Package C-09: Construction of Eight Elevated Metro Stations viz Ashokvan Dongargaon Mohgaon Meghdoot CIDCO Butibori Police Station MHADA Colony MIDC KEC and MIDC ESR in Reach1A of NMRP Phase 2 (current bid opening: September 10)
