Bangalore Metro Yellow Line’s 1st Titagarh-Built Train Rolls Out

Titagarh Rail Systems today rolled out the first of 14 locally assembled new trains in Uttarpara, West Bengal for 19.143 km Bangalore Metro Yellow Line (Reach 5) which will connect RV Road – Electronic City – Bommasandra via 16 stations.

The 6-coach train is part of Bangalore Metro Phase 2 project’s 36 train (216 coach) contract 4RS-DM which was awarded to CRRC by Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) in December 2019. 34 of those trains will be assembled locally by Titagarh in Uttarpara as part of a subcontract signed in 2021.

Out of 36 new trains, 21 trains will be deployed on the purple and green lines, alongside the existing 56 trains supplied by BEML. The rest 15 new trains will be deployed on the new Yellow Line.

Today’s train is effectively the third train of contract 4RS-DM to roll out. The first train manufactured by CRRC for the Yellow Line (configured for CBTC) had rolled out from Nanjing, China in November 2023 and arrived in India in February 2024. The first train for the Purple Line (configured for DTG) rolled out in December 2024.

Titagarh had received this train-set’s car body shells from China in November 2023 and took roughly 13 months to equip them with interior, electrical & mechanical fittings, and perform testing.

This is the first stainless-steel based train-set assembled by Titagarh. All other trains they’ve made for Pune Metro have an aluminum body shell.

Per a X post by Tejasvi Surya, MP for Bengaluru South, “Titagarh has further committed to delivering 1 metro train per month & scaling up to 2 trainsets monthly from March“. However, per Titagarh’s press release, “Titagarh will deliver two more trainsets to the Yellow Line by April this year. The company will then ramp up production, delivering two trains a month by September 2025“.

BMRCL hasn’t announced a concrete game-plan for operationalizing the Yellow Line, so it’s really anyone’s guess at this time on what will happen. I reckon they’ll wait until they have at least 6 train-sets to maintain a respectable train frequency that local citizens deserve.

Wonder if BMRCL could have requested TRSL to deliver 14 nos, 3 coach train sets on priority? They could then have followed it up by delivering 14 nos, 3 mm passenger coaches sets to add in the middle.

This would have hastened the ability of BMRCL to deliver trains at lower frequency, faster. There would potentially have been the same crowding issues that the Purple & Green line users experienced, till all the train sets were converted over time to 6 coach trains by adding 3 passenger coaches in the middle.

Even now for the rest of the deliveries from TRSL for all the trains for the Yellow & (Purple & Green) lines – 13 + 20, could BMRCL request them to prioritise in this manner?
