Bhopal Metro’s OWG Launched at Habibganj Naka over Railway Line

RKC Infratech on a subcontract from Dilip Buildcon Ltd. (DBL) this week launched an open web girder (OWG) truss bridge for Package BH-01 of 27.9 km Bhopal Metro Phase 1 project‘s Priority Corridor connecting Subhash Nagar Station and AIIMS.

Utilizing a 3 hour mega traffic block, the 65 meter long steel bridge was slowly pushed into position at Habibganj Naka across the Indian Railways’ 3 main-line tracks between Rani Kamlapati Metro Station and DRM Office Metro Station (view on Google Maps).

The bridge weighs ~416 MT and was placed into position using multiple rollers and hydraulic jacks. To facilitate this, RKC in August had launched two 33.5m MG girders over the railway line using two mobile cranes within a 2-hour block.

Bhopal Metro will likely consist of another 2 OWGs south of Krishi Upaj Mandi Station on Orange Line and north-west of Bogda Pul Interchange of Orange & Blue lines – view map.

MPMRCL had started trial runs on a portion of Bhopal Metro’s Priority Corridor using one of their new Alstom MOVIA train-sets in October 2023. With the launch of this OWG, I expect trains to crossover towards DRM Office, Alkapuri and AIIMS towards the end of Q1 2025.
