11 Bidders for Lucknow Metro Line-2’s Geotechnical Contract

Eleven firms have submitted bids to conduct geotechnical soil investigation for 11.165 km Lucknow Metro Phase 1B project which will connect Charbagh Railway Station and Vasant Kunj with 12 stations.

Package LKGS-01 is the second contract, after topographical contract LKTS-01, for developing Lucknow Metro’s east-west Line-2 which will run through old Lucknow.

The objective of this geotechnical investigation is to have sufficient data on the sub-soil to assist with preparing detailed design of structures, and use appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction. This will also help ensure least possible damage to existing structures during the construction phase.

Per Phase 1B’s updated Detailed Project Report (DPR), Lucknow’s Line-2 will have an approximate elevated length of 4.286 km with 5 stations between Vasant Kunj – Thakurganj, and an underground length of 6.879 km with 7 stations between Charbagh – Niwazganj.

UPMRC had invited bids for its geotechnical investigation in August 2024 with a Rs. 77.21 lakh estimate and 90 day deadline. Technical bids were opened today to reveal the following 11 bidders.

Bidders

  • Arun Soil Lab Pvt. Ltd.
  • Becquerel Industries Pvt. Ltd.

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which for a small-value contract like this will take no more than a month to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.

Lucknow Metro’s Phase 1B was approved for construction by Uttar Pradesh’s government in January 2024 with an estimated cost of Rs. 5801.05 crore. It’s currently awaiting approval from the Central Government’s Public Investment Board (PIB) within the Finance Ministry.

This geotechnical investigation is one of the several steps UPMRC has to take prior to construction which I envision will not start until at least Q1 2026.
