5 Bidders for Nagpur Metro Phase 2’s OHE Contract TR-02

Five firms have submitted bids for the 25 kV overhead equipment (OHE) electrification contract of Nagpur Metro’s 43.8 km Phase 2 project after Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro) opened technical bids on Wednesday.

This package TR-02 will be funded through a proposed loan by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and European Investment Bank (EIB). Its scope includes commissioning a flexible OHE and posts within all at-grade and elevated sections of the project.

A separate electrification contract under Package TR-03 (details at bottom) involves commissioning Phase 2 project’s 33 kV cable network, ASS, RSS, SCADA system.

Maha-Metro had invited bids for Package TR-02 in December 2023 with an unknown estimate and 180 weeks (3.45 year) deadline. The list below shows lead bidders, some may have bid in a JV with other firms.

Bidders

  • Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL)
  • KEC International Ltd.
  • Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.
  • Siemens Ltd. – Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) JV
  • Texmaco Rail and Engineering Ltd.

Maha-Metro’s Brief Scope: Design, supply, installation, testing & commissioning of 25kV flexible OHE and sectioning posts for Nagpur Metro Rail Project, Phase-2.

The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.

This is so far the third systems related contract of Phase 2, that I’m aware of, where at least technical bids have been opened after electrical and mechanical works package E&M-02 and track package T-01. Both have had their financial bids opened as well.

Technical bids for electrification package TR-03 involving Phase 2’s 33 kV cable network, ASS, RSS and SCADA system were supposed to open today, but has now been pushed out to July 11.

I’ll admit I don’t know enough about Nagpur, but based on my last visit, the southern end of phase 1 at Khapri was already a deserted-highway-interchange & farmland kinda location. Extending it so much further into the countryside rather than densifying metro or bus networks within the city is wild.

Inducing real estate demand and controlling urban sprawl is the goal here (So that people moving to Nagpur are more likely to move to apartments near these new stations as opposed to farm plots in all directions like what has happened before in much of India, leading to auto dependency and terrible urbanism). This is what China does as well, and works well when you know that your cities are going to keep on growing in population for the foreseeable future.

The only alternative would be to encourage infill development near the existing city center, but land acquisition from all the different private owners would be difficult without a and pooling policy

You are right about you know nothing about Nagpur. Metro will be extended from Khapri till buttobori which is MIDC area and thousands of people commute from Nagpur to Buttibori everyday. Metro should have been developed at this route already .
