Location of UG Stations on Bangalore Metro’s Gottigere-Nagawara Line

I just got my hands on a document which displays a highly detailed design of the 13.79 km underground section of Bangalore Metro’s 21.25 km Gottigere – Nagawara line which will be developed under the 72 km Phase 2 project. The document was produced by AECOM, a global engineering design firm, which got appointed as Line-4’s detailed design consultant (DDC) in 2015-16.

As mentioned previously, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. is in talks with EIB to fund this section’s construction, but hasn’t been able to secure a deal and get all the nitty gritty loan parameters set in stone. As such, this section remains the only part of the Phase 2 project for which the BMRCL has not yet invited civil construction bids for – see current status map here.

The underground section’s ramp will be located between Jayadeva Hospital and Dairy Circle while its northern terminal at Nagawara will be located north of the Outer Ring Road near Elements Mall. Civil work has been divided up into 4 packages with each package consisting of 3 stations:

• Package 1 – Dairy Circle, MICO Industries, Langford Town
• Package 2 – Vellara Road, MG Road, Shivaji Nagar
• Package 3 – Cantonment, Pottery Town, Tannery Road
• Package 4 – Venkateshpura, Arabic College, Nagawara

I can’t share the document here, so I’ve marked the exact center point of all stations’ boxes (typically 250m long x 30m wide) using blue M symbols. The line’s alignment might be a little off here or there, but the location of the stations is accurate with some stations planned to be built under roads (eg. Bannerghatta Road) and a majority under private land (eg. along Tannery Road) which will need to be acquired.

Note – land acquisition for this section is still in its infancy and some of you might have even noticed preliminary notifications by KIADB in the local papers. Depending on the outcome of that, the locations might change slightly by the time construction work begins.

Click or tap on the M symbol to view its name in the map below:

Hi, for that extension, only the line’s general alignment has been fixed – see this post.

Next step would be to create a Detailed Project Report and that’ll provide station locations (suggested site, alternate sites). Give it some time.

BMRCL and state govt are sticking to 2020. Recently one of BMRCL’s engineering officials said 2022 in a community TED-talk type event.

Year of completion depends on many interlinked factors – funding, land acquisition, bidding (keep in mind system bids such as rolling stock, signalling haven’t been invited either), tunneling progress, post-tunneling completion etc etc. That said, I just don’t see it opening before 2024.

Why would they want to put Vellara Junction station near Baldwin’s school. It is nearly 500-600 m from Richmond Road, below which phase 3 line is planned.
How effective will the interchange be if the keep it 1km apart?

    • TMRG says:

Hi, that new PH3 line might be generally planned below Richmond Road, but for all we know, its new station could be built closer and under Campbell Road. That station will be very deep and require quite some land around it, so I doubt it would come up directly below Richmond Road.

BTW, the north-end of Vellara Jct Station of this line is about 250m from Richmond Road.

        Hi TMRG,

According to the KIADB notification which you have shared in one of the threads (http://imgur.com/7BBKBg7) and with a little bit of local knowledge of the geography near Vellara Junction I know the properties which are to be acquired for the Vellara Junction station mostly belong to the following establishments

CSI Tustees – All Saints Church
Divisional manager of Burmha Shell – BP petrol bunk
PV Francis,David – Hotel Tom’s and Fathima Bakery

All these lie between Richmond road and Campbell Road.

In the map it is shown that the station will be south of Campbell road. Is extra land been acquired for building the station or is the station been built in between Campbell road and Richmond road?

          Nice observation! This is interesting.

The docs show the station box taking up the entire width of the road between Masjid-E-Askari (excluding) and Baldwin Methodist College’s buildings with 2 major entrances at Baldwin HS playground (north-west side) and Rashtriya Military School (south-east side). North of that, the tunnels are shown to pass under “Lusitania” frozen foods, some unknown “super market” and “Hotel Thomas”.

Since KIADB is acquiring the lands you mentioned, it looks like its location has been moved a little northward. Perhaps Baldwin objected to it being right in front of their main gate?

        • TMRG says:

Hi, you’re not pestering me 🙂 In fact, the EIA report for Reach 6 mentions the chainage of stations which gives an idea about its location –

          Gottigere 411
          Hulimavu 1484.5
          IIM –B 3204
          J P Nagar – IV Phase 4575
          Jayadeva Hospital 5414

If that still holds true, then the Gottigere Station will be 5003m away from the Jayadeva Interchange Station which’ll be located above the Marenahalli Rd-Bannerghata Rd intersection.

Looking at that, the Gottigere Station will come up in front of the Islamiah Institute Of Technology – view on google maps

            Hi TMRG,

Looks like we will keep you pestering until something concrete comes up from the BMRCL guys 😉

For your info, I stay close to gottigere (Actual gottigere and not near islamia institute). To bring to your notice, I have had a casual conversation with one of the priest of a temple that is right on the bannerghatta main road (near gottigere bus stop). According to him, they have been served a notice to vacate the temple as it is said that the station would be coming up at that location. Once again, I am not sure and giving you this info based on the conversation I had with him. So, I believe that the station of gottigere would be farther than Islamia (which is close to Meenakshi Mall). I am sharing the location of the temple which I was talking about https://goo.gl/maps/cCoASXnnvzu

Also, BMRCL had long back invited tender for demolition work on Kalena Agrahara (which is further away from Islamia Institute) on bannerghatta main raod. So, this also adds on to the speculation about the exact location of Gottigere station.

          • TMRG says:

Thanks for your input. So the plot thickens… 🙂

          • sunil says:

Gottigere BBMP office or the Gottigere bus stop should be the point of metro station or else its not Gottigere exactly, i would appreciate if Bannerghatta national park could have been considered since many visitors come here and can be great.

          • Harsha says:

Thanks for sharing the above details. I stay close by to Gottigere and the location what you have shared is of Hulimavu and not gottigere. If this is true, its really non-sense as BMRCL has been saying that the line is upto Gottigere from Nagawara in all its reports. Based on my analysis on BMRCL website, the notification for acquiring land is given only till Kalena Agrahara which is about 1 km from the location which you have mentioned and again away from Gottigere for about close to 2 kms.

I hope funding becomes finalized soon and becomes easier once phase -1 ridership increases substantially (If only they had 6 coach trains, it could’ve been even higher. Now at least some people will avoid using metro because of congestion).

BTW, why on earth did they plan 3-coach trains in the first place?

For 5 years before the full purple line was completed, metro ridership was very poor. Perhaps a single coach could have sufficed!

Accumulated losses would have been much higher if 6 coach trains had been used as operating costs would have been almost double. So, getting loans would have been much harder.

But, BMRC should have been ready by this time (after all, it is revenue loss now – and since past year since entire Pink line was opened)?

Anyway, no point as that’s how they chose to prioritize it. It would’ve been great for both BMRC and commuters to have those 6-coach trains by now.

Around 1 lakh employees work in Manyata tech park. We can expect a huge crowd of Manyata employees alighting at Nagwara station once this route is completed. It will be nice if there is direct subway/skywalk ( will be about 350 mts long )from Nagwara station connecting Manyata. Without this they will have to walk for close to 1 km in the congested service road.

    Reply
    • TMRG says:

2 possible reasons – (1) piecemeal planning throughout India (2) line efficiency is met when trains remain dedicated to their line & don’t have to slow down to enter another line. Chennai is currently struggling with this where they’ve allowed Green Line trains to use the Blue Line up to the airport. The station display systems & announcements are way off from what I hear.

Further, almost all metro systems across the world are built in stages with line additions. Even extensive metro networks like those in New York, London or Paris mostly use separate corridors for separate routes as it makes the system efficient by providing dedicated tracks for different lines & avoids duplication whilst making it easy for commuters with interchanges where they cross.

    HI TMRG,
Thanks for providing the UG stn location details. After thoroughly looking at the map of these stations, I am completely disappointed with the location choosen. Most of the stations are around 300 to 400 meters away from crucial areas where commuters would like to arrive at or depart.
Any public transport should take care of minimising distances of transport Interchange

    Example

Baldwin school station – Should be much closer to Vellara junction
MG Road station – Should be located more southward so that interchange time with pink line is reduced
Shivajinagar Station – Should locate closer to Shivajinagar bus stand.
Cantonment station – Should be located more northward and maybe directly under Cant Railway station
Pottery town station – If there is a entrance on the right side of railway track then ok
Nagawara station – The biggest users here will be Manyata Tech Park employees and hence the line can deviate a bit and station located underground of MTP

    • Sham says:

I had a close look too. Except for Vellara, all others look Ok.The station locations marked are the exact centers of stations (as stated by TMRG). So, roughly 125mtrs on both sides (along the line of the tunnels) will be occupied by the station following which there may be direct subways to connect important points like Manyata, MG Rd (interchange), Shivajinagar bus stand etc. like they did in 1st phase at all UG stns (Cubbon park, Vidhana soudha, Sir Visweswaraya etc).

The problem is only at Vellara as the distance seems nearly 500mtrs. So, a 1/2 km walk will be required (at the very least) to interchange trains whenever the ph3 line gets built. Even for accessing the junction & Richmond rd, one has to take a 0.5km hike once out of the station.

I don’t think its possible to build station below Cant stn with heavy rail trains running above.

      Reply
      • TMRG says:

        Exactly.

To give you all an idea of station scale & size, the new MG Road Station’s box will take up the entire Kamaraj Road’s length between MG Road & Cubbon Road. The new & old stations will go on to form a ‘L’ shaped structure at different levels which’ll be connected by a series of stairs and escalators allowing easy transfers.

        Reply
        • sham says:

I think the location for Vellara has been chosen south of Richmond road to facilitate the construction of another UG station along Richmond road in ph-3. I have a feeling that the station in ph-2 will probably be at a deeper depth to allow the other one in ph-3 to be built above it. The terrain also suggests this as there is a gradual rise of the surface up to Richmond road after which it slopes downwards towards MG road.

TMRG, your thoughts on this? What is the depth of this station below surface on the drawings?

Hi, “in-principle approval” is a very Indian term and doesn’t amount to anything. Things are simple:
      1) BMRCL and EIB are in talks to fund this
      2) No deal has been struck
      2) EIB has a certain set of requirements that need to be met: (a) proper environmental impact assessment – see report (b) proper handling of resident resettlement – see special policy (c) unique bidding parameters with more stringent requirements
      4) Tenders docs for construction are ready, but will only be published & sold when a deal is struck.
      5) Even after reaching this stage of talks, things between the lender & operator can fall apart. Eg. JICA and Madhya Pradesh (Indore/Bhopal) or JICA and Amaravati where JICA has walked out.

Going by the experience with phase 1 underground tunneling I think once the work starts it would take atleast 5 years to complete this line. The whole route is through congested old areas of the city and it would bring the entire CBD area to a grinding halt for few years.
Also as the airport line is being planned to start from nagawara , so no airport connectivity also for next 5 years atleast. OMG the work has not even started!!!

    Reply
    • sham says:

I think your statement “the entire CBD area to a grinding halt for few years” is incorrect. Majestic, City Market, Malleswaram, Yeshwanthapur, Richmond town, even MG road areas will be unaffected (except for road closure of Kamraj rd between MG rd & Cubbon rd, but there are alternate roads).

Even Shivajinagar & Vellara may remain unaffected as stations are planned off the roads. The rest of the UG section passes in areas like Tannery rd & Nagawara rd – these are not really CBDs as ORR connects Nagawara from both sides. Hosur rd construction is on service rd. So, the pain points will only be RV rd to Silkboard & Bannerghatta rd (elevated section).

Airport connectivity will take longer as it is still in prelim stage. Shouldn’t cause too much of a problem as the airport rd expressway + alternate roads should take care of connectivity in the interim.

We need to be thankful to this person for gathering and providing the information to the common public. May be you need to go to BMRCL office to get the information you need.

    Hi TMRG,

Great job! I have a question regarding the underground ramp on Bannerghatta Road. Do you happen where exactly it’ll be located between Jayadeva and Dairy Circle?

    Thanks!
