Gujarat Govt Approves Ahmedabad Metro’s 34.6 km Phase 2

On October 24, the Gujarat government’s cabinet headed by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani approved the detailed project report (DPR) for Ahmedabad Metro’s 34.6 km Phase 2 project connecting the city with Gandhinagar and the under construction Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) project.

The Gujarat state government in February 2016 had allocated a sum of Rs 2 crore in its 2016-17 state budget for Phase-2’s DPR and then appointed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to prepare it. This entirely elevated project is estimated to cost Rs 6,758-crore and will feature 24 stations.

Two metro stretches will be developed in this phase –

Line-2 (extension) – The 39.259 km Phase 1’s 18.522 km Line-2 will be extended northward from Motera Station to connect Sachivalaya and Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. This extension will feature 18 stations named Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gaam, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, Sector-1, Sector-10A, Sachivalaya, Old Sachivalaya, Sector-22, Sector-16 and Mahatma Mandir.

Line-3 (new) – This brand new line will connect Gujarat National Law University in Raysan village with GIFT City. It’ll be developed on the public–private partnership (PPP) model and feature 6 stations named GNLU (interchange with Line-2), Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University(PPDU), Diamond Tower, Vithh, Udhyan and Exhibition. Most likely this line will form a loop around GIFT City similar to Gurgaon’s Rapid Metro around Cyber City.

Rough alignment to give a general idea:

Phase 1 (Under Construction) | Phase 2 (Proposed)

An additional line connecting to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport was proposed in the draft DPR, but has been dropped due to viability concerns. No further details on the project’s timeline or source of funding have been announced.

Earlier during initial days of metro there were two routes, gandhinagar to sarkhej( parellel to sarkhej highway) and gandhinagar to APMC via incometax( parellel to the road), but in later stage everything changed. I think the reason can be that connectivity and road is improved now. Even Sarkhej highway is converted 6 lane and a non stop highway. I do not think metro will come up too soon there.
