CMRS Approves Delhi Metro Magenta Line’s Kalkaji – B. Garden Section
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on Sunday evening announced that it has received a conditional approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) for starting commercial operations on the 12.64 km Botanical Garden – Kalkaji Mandir section of Delhi Metro’s new 38.23 km Magenta Line (Line-8).
The CMRS conducted a thorough 3-day final inspection between November 13-15 – see images from Day-1, Day-2 and Day-3.
As per the DMRC’s press release to the Press Trust of India,
The approval is conditional and based on the compliance of some more requirements. The exact date of opening of the corridor will be intimated after the compliance of all the requirements specified by the CMRS.
From what I hear, these conditions are minor in nature. Once any of them or their count are known, I’ll add them here.
Update – here’s the entire approval letter consisting of 6 pages –
This first section of the line includes 9 stations at Kalkaji Mandir, Okhla NSIC, Sukhdev Vihar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Jasola Vihar Shaheen Bagh, Kalindi Kunj, Okhla Bird Sanctuary and Botanical Garden – all equipped with semi-height platform screen doors. While Kalkaji Mandir is underground, all other stations are elevated –
Meanwhile, here’s an aerial shot of how the Blue Line (Line-3) and the Magenta Line (Line-8) meet at Botanical Garden in Noida, forming the 1st interchange outside of Delhi –
As stated previously, the line’s launch date is now entirely dependent on the availability of local and national ministers. That’s just how things unfortunately roll.

When will sector 62 extension be completed?
They’re trying to complete the City Centre – Sector 71 section on priority and have it open along with Noida’s Aqua Line in mid-2018. Rest of it will open later, perhaps towards the end of the year.
There is a stretch of about 100 meters, right after city centre metro (before Sec 34 station) which is not moving because of high tension wires just above it. Don’t know how they plan to go about it.
Most likely end of 2018. Don’t keeps yours hopes high, the work on the City Center to Sec 62 extension is progressing very slowly.
most likely by 2022
Hi, when will the rest of the line will open. I think Magenta line was to strech and connect with Janak Puri .West metro station? When can we expect it.
Tough to put a timeframe. Signalling tests are underway between Janakpuri – IGI, and the DMRC plans to open it without the IGI-Kalkaji mid-section where signalling tests will begin only after the Kalkaji – Botanical Garden section opens.
I was driving past the Hauz Khas and Panchsheel stations yesterday and the workers were putting final touches to the exterior of the station entrances. Wonder what the situation is within the station itself.
Good to know! I’m trying to get some images from within all stations on the line. Will post on Twitter when I get a hold of them.
What are those scribbled words adjacent to each condition?
Names of different DMRC departments or officers who need to own that condition / stipulation and perform necessary action by November 21, so that DMRC can submit their compliance report back to the CMRS.
When will metro reach Gaur chowk which is another 7 KM’s ahead of Noida city centre.
Hi, see my reply to Anil above.
When will metro reach Gaur chowk?
Not before 2021
Hi do you have any update regarding the extention of City centre line till Greater Noida Via Sec-1O of greater Noida.
Also is it sure that metro will be build there
The City Centre line (Blue Line) is being extended to Electronic City in Noida. That can’t be extended to Greater Noida.
Are you referring to the Aqua Line’s extension to Knowledge Park in Greater Noida? That’s still in the proposal stage. Project requires an approval from the UP government’s cabinet. Maybe that’ll happen after the first 30 km section opens up? Let’s see.
Please let us know the final date of inauguration of this line . It has taken such a long time.
It seems inauguration will take place after 1st when UP local elections are over.
When is the mid section likely to complete and commence operations ?IGI to Kalkaji Mandir.
Sometime in the 2nd half of 2018? Signalling tests haven’t commenced on that stretch yet.
But isn’t the Magenta line project suppose to complete by Mar 18
In this phase, DMRC’s publicly facing estimates (relayed by the mainstream media) cannot be relied upon.
More than 10 days have passed since the safety approval came and still no news of opening for public. already delayed by a year and this is the response from authorities. need a complete mindset change when it comes to civic projects…
It seems they are working to close the open points mentioned in the CMRS report . As mentioned in the report Conditions A to Z need to be enumerated before starting the services in this section .
If you see the notes at the bottom of the 1st page, DMRC had an internal deadline of November 21 to meet and have each head of dept (HOD) rectify and submit their compliance, so that DMRC could submit their ‘compliance report’ back to the CMRS.
From what I hear, they’re facing scheduling difficulties right now in getting all relevant local/national ministers to attend.
What a hypocrisy. Isn’t all these netas delaying the commissioning of line not leading to revenue loss? Or do they plan to recover this loss by further increasing fares?
Nothing has come up for inaugural of Majenta Line ?????
Apparently they r waiting for PM and CM who r busy in Guj elections. So v can expect any progress only after 14th dec.sad but true!
I can hear the trains buzzing day and night at Sukhdev Vihar station but there is still no service even after almost one month of approvals.
BTW there are escalator assemblies unloaded on the sidewalks under the Sukhdev Vihar station for more than a week. Guess they are still waiting for some parts to complete the installation.
Finally news coming that line will open from Christmas!
They better do it as their clearance is valid only till 31 Dec.
Any update for Janakpuri to IGI or rest of Magenta line section’s operation
