GMRC Invites Bids for Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 Construction

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) this past week kick-started the tendering process for the Rs. 5384.17 cr Phase 2 project of Ahmedabad Metro which includes the construction of two elevated corridors, totaling 28.254 km, to connect up with Gandhinagar and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Package 1 includes the elevated section from Motera to GNLU (8.124 km) and GNLU to GIFT City (5.420 km) with a total of 10 stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and GIFT City. Although not called out in the notice, the scope likely includes the construction of the Sabarmati River bridge.

Package 2 includes the elevated section from GNLU to Gandhinagar Sector-1 (6.478 km) with 5 stations at Raysan, Randesan, Dholakuva Circle, Infocity, Sector-1.

This is a fantastic development for Ahmedabad as GMRC has invited bids even while 33.26/39.26 km (84%) of Phase 1 is still under construction. Elsewhere, especially in cities with phase-wise metro construction, there’s little to no overlap in phase to phase construction – either due to a lack of funds, centre-state disagreements, petty politics or excruciating long delays in executing pending work.

With this, tender notice(s) inviting bids are now pending for just a 8.2 km section, all within Gandhinagar, to connect Sector-10A, Sachivalaya, Akshardham, Juna Sachivalaya, Sector-16, Sector-24 and Mahatma Mandir.
