PM Modi Inaugurates Agra Metro’s Construction Work
Moments ago, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated piling work – the first step of civil construction – for Agra Metro’s 29.40 km Phase 1 project which will consist of 2 lines and 28 stations.
Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) will first be developing the 14.25 km Line-1’s roughly 7 km ‘Priority Corridor’ with a mix of 3 elevated and 3 underground stations between Jama Masjid and Taj East Gate.
Within that, Sam India Builtwell will be building the Taj East Gate – Taj Mahal Ramp elevated section (Package AGCC-01) through 3 stations at Fatehabad Road, Basai and Taj East Gate. In addition, Lisha Engineers will construct PAC Depot (Package AGCC-03) at the site of today’s local event. Both contractors began barricading portions of their sites in November.
Agra’s metro project was approved by the Central Government’s cabinet on February 28, 2019 with an estimated cost of Rs. 8,379.62 crore and 5 year official deadline. The Prime Minister had laid its foundation stone, again virtually via video-conferencing, on March 8, 2019.
The project’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared by RITES and comprises of the following 2 lines (view detailed project information)
Line-1: Sikandra – Taj East Gate
- Length: 14.25 km
- Type: Elevated (6.569 km) and underground (7.681 km)
- Depot: PAC (16.3 hectares)
- Number of Stations: 14
- Station Names: Sikandra, Guru Ka Taal, ISBT, Shastri Nagar (future), RBS College, Raja Ki Mandi, Agra College, Medical College, Jama Masjid, Agra Fort, Taj Mahal (Purani Mandi), Fatehabad Road, Basai & Taj East Gate
Line-2: Agra Cantt. – Kalindi Vihar
- Length: 15.15 km
- Type: Elevated
- Depot: Kalindi Vihar (11.9 hectares)
- Number of Stations: 15
- Station Names: Agra Cantt., Sultanpura, Sadar Bazaar, Pratap Pura (future), Collectorate, Subhash Park, Agra College, Hariparvat Chauraha, Sanjay Place, MG Road, Sultanganj Crossing, Kamla Nagar, Rambagh, Foundary Nagar, Mandi Samiti (Agra Mandi) & Kalindi Vihar

UPMRC has been extremely quick in conducting the bidding process for the project’s initial civil and system systems. Its rolling stock & signaling package, which was combined with Kanpur’s to bring down cost, was awarded to Bombardier even before the first civil contract was awarded to Sam India – something which is unprecedented in India.

With this development, Agra has become the 20th city in India where construction work has started, and I’ve now moved its position on the site’s menu bar. Within Uttar Pradesh, it’s become the 5th system – after Lucknow Metro, Noida Metro, Kanpur Metro and Meerut Metro (integrated within Delhi-Meerut RRTS) – where work has started.
In the coming months, Patna will become the 21st (contract awarded to NCC in September; geotechnical work underway) followed by Surat where bidding is underway for civil construction.

Bihar has the habit to stay back in everything..Patna metro was a step further than Agra metro in tendering work..Now it’s back of Agra metro.. We can’t expect good thing from Bihar and Patna.

Agra metro awarded tenders for only 3 km section while patna metro awarded it for 6.1km and bidding underway on 16km corridor. Agra metro is still far all from patna in tendering process.

You have not added ghaziabad which comes under Uttar Pradesh??
At present, Ghaziabad doesn’t have a dedicated Metro corporation/system as other cities have. It’s counted under Delhi Metro.
Now I am waiting for opening bids of Mogarpada Depot on Tomorrow. TMRG, is J Kumar and NCC have awarded a contract to construct Yellow Line Phase 2 (Line2B) balance civil work?
Mogharpada’s submission deadline has been moved yet again. New date is Jan 12 and opening on Jan 15.

Wastage of money..it cant be successful im city like agra..we wont require any metro..agra has there old requirment of good stadium,international airport and several flyover…have good team of consulatant who can give honest feasibility report to govt..
Just because you money to waste that doesnt means you always waste that money
Metro projects are not planned just looking at Present scenario but future as well. That’s where DPR comes in picture with lot of study and research and hence approved. Agra metro is justified in this scenario.
1. International Reputation and hence need to have atleast one solid public transportation.
2. Constructing flyover here and there is not an option looking at how unplanned road are in central part of the city with no possibility of future expansion.
3. International airport is must. this has been a long demand. But considering jewar airport is already sanctioned, Domestic termina should be the priority now.
DPR shd be considered for all feasible public transports and not only for metro. even metro hv cheap options like metro lite.
To de-congest the city, one need to expand the facilities outside the conjunction range and ppl will move out. flyovers is need of hour for cities SO in my view, Metro for these tier 2 cities is waste of public money and politically motivated only, example is jaipur where since so many years the starting pkg line used by visitors to view jaipur.
Going for BRT is better option in my view for these T2 cities.
Lakhs of tourist visit agra every year. Metro will help them
People Visit mainly thru Taj Expresswaywhich is directly connected to Taj Mahal.
For people reaching by train, battery operated AC buses will be boosters.
Agra has more tourist places then Taj Mahal Alone. Though Agra Fort and Taj Mahal are in proximity, Sikandra, is at the opposite corner. People don’t visit the place due to absence of Local transportation between these places. MetroLite as well as Monorail was planned which was not feasible. The route which is planned won’t be a failure as it was in Jaipur Metro Case.
The study was done, DPR was created based on these facts only that Road Transportation won’t be successfull here just because of one simple fact, the lifeline of the city MG Road cannot be expanded anymore which provides connectivity to all part of the city.
What about patna underground sections
Bid submission deadline is December 29. If they don’t move the date, I’ll post a list of all bidders on that evening.

…was checking the quick snap-shot page of your blog. Total Operational Routes: 678.48 km, with over 400km under construction..
So, what do you reckon, when will the 1000km mark (as operational route) be breached? 2022 / 2023 ??
Perhaps in 2024? By then we’ll see double digit additions (20+ kms) from Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune, with smaller additions from Kanpur, Nagpur, Kolkata, Agra and Patna.

– Total number of operational / under-construction / planned(approved) Stations?
– Total number of operational / under-construction / planned(approved) Depots?
– Total number of operational / planned (under design/manufacturing/delivery) Rolling stocks (train sets and coaches)?
…like anyone would be interested to know what does 678.48km of operational route translates into = how many stations, depots, trains/coaches??

It will be a tall order to have 1700km operational by 2025.
…even if the target is unrealistic, I would condone the leader for putting up such an aspirational goal. As i say, it is the Technocrat’s job now to deliver (enough political will prevails in the ecosystem to take-up such project)…
