L&T-STEC Restarts Mumbai Metro’s TBM Surya-1 towards CSMT
2020 had one last surprise in store!
Workers from Larsen & Toubro – Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Company (L&T – STEC) JV on Thursday recommissioned tunnel boring machine (TBM) XRE 2114-408 from Hutatma Chowk towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) for Mumbai Metro’s 33.5 km Line-3 (Aqua Line).
This Robbins Crossover XRE TBM, nicknamed Surya-1, had recorded a breakthrough in November for Package UGC-01 at Hutatma Chowk Station’s southern-end from Churchgate, and was then dragged to its northern-end through the 233 meter long station box using hydraulic jacks.
It has now been recommissioned on its 4th assignment towards CSMT (or CST) Station to build its final 551 meter long tunnel for Line-3’s up-line.
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC)’s Twitter handle shared this really nice video of the machine getting dragged, and then configured for launch with a view of the first temporary ring it started building:
