PM Modi Launches Surat Metro & Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 Projects
Moments ago, India’s Prime Minister remotely inaugurated construction work on Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2, at an event held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, and on Surat Metro’s Phase 1 at an event held at Diamond Bourse Dream City.
Both new projects are being executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) with 750 V DC Third Rail electrification. Official deadlines have not been announced.
Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2
Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 is 28.25 km long and comprises of two elevated corridors as an extension of the Phase 1’s 18.522 km Line-2 (Red Line), northwards from Motera Cricket Stadium towards GNLU and onward to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. At GNLU Station, a short 5.42 km spur line will connect to GIFT City across the Sabarmati River.
Corridors | Length (KM) | Stations |
Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir | 22.838 | 20 |
GNLU To GIFT City | 5.416 | 2 |
The Phase 2 project was approved by India’s Central Government’s Cabinet on February 19, 2019 and is estimated to cost Rs. 5384 crore. It will be partly financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a 82.434 million Japanese Yen (approx. Rs. 4,300 crore) loan.
Contracts for its construction were awarded to Ranjit Buildcon (6.478 km Package C2) and Afcons Infrastructure (14.36 km Package C1) in Q4 2020. A tender notice for a new depot at Infocity and its final 8.2 km section, between Sector-10A and Mahatma Mandir, is pending.
So far roughly 6 km out of 39.259 km in Phase 1 has become operational due to a host of reasons, so Ahmedabad has now joined Bangalore (2015-2017) in becoming the only cities where two phases have or are being developed simultaneously.
Detailed information on Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2’s lines, stations and tenders/contracts can be viewed here.
Surat Metro Phase 1
Surat Metro’s 40.35 km Phase 1 project with two lines and 38 stations was approved by the Gujarat state government in January 2017 and by the Central Government’s cabinet in March 2019 with an estimated cost of Rs. 12020.32 crore.
Corridors | Length (KM) | Stations |
Line-1: Sarthana to Dream City | 21.61 km | 20 |
Line-2: Bhesan to Saroli | 18.74 | 18 |
Surat’s metro project – India’s 22nd – is estimated to cost Rs.12,020 crore and will be partly financed by Agence Française de Développement (AFD) through a 250 million euro (approx. Rs. 2071 crore) loan.
So far contracts for two of three sections of Surat Metro’s Line-1, where financial bids have been opened, have been awarded for construction. Here’s a status:
- Elevated Package CS1: 11.6 km Dream City – Kadarsha Ni Nal: Awarded to Sadbhav Engineering Ltd. – SP Singla Constructions
- Underground Package CS2: 3.46 km Kapodra Ramp – Surat Railway Station: Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV is lowest bidder (not awarded yet)
- Underground Package CS3: 3.56 km Surat Railway Station – Chowk Bazar Ramp: Awarded to J Kumar Infraprojects

PM modi in his inaugural speech said that government have received approved Ahmedabad-dholera monorail. So I think TOI information is correct.
State government’s approval? It’s possible but I haven’t seen any official confirmation such as a press release, notice or tweet. Let me know if you or someone else reading this does.
Hearing a lot about this Dholera city, is this an upcoming fintech city like Gurgaon ?
Dholera is a upcoming planned smart city which is also a Special Investment Region.
When will line 2 of ahmedabad metro in phase 1 become operational status of it’s train also
They’re aiming for August 15, 2022.
At least 10 trains have arrived at Gyaspur Depot, but trains haven’t been able to venture out. The viaduct right outside of it at Vejalpur is incomplete due to land acquisition issues, as you might know.
Any idea when will GC be finalized for Surat Metro..??
Naah. Will share results whenever I hear something.
Shouldn’t we consider gandhinagar and GIFT city as a separate zone(cities ofc) like noida ncr gurugram type thing so it makes U/C if surat 22nd then to 24th ?? Or we will go with Ahmedabad as the main brach here??
I like to count by ‘system’ and not by city or town. Otherwise things will get hairy pretty soon. 🙂
For example, Delhi Metro serves a bunch of suburbs including small non-descript towns like Loni, Ballabhgarh. Keeping a track of all those will not be fun. Serves no purpose either.
Bade Babu of MoHUA says “..1,016 km of Metro Network & RRTS is under construction..”..
https://twitter.com/Secretary_MoHUA/status/1351113742902317056
..Is that a correct statement TMRG (by any stretch of measurement)?
‘Approved’ length has no meaning…
will the count reach 1016km for A + B + C ?
A – ‘under construction’
B – ‘already awarded, awaiting construction to commence’
C – ‘already tendered, pending award’
Let’s scrutinize authenticity of the statement of this chap Durga Mishra..
That 1016 km is misleading. I hear such inflated numbers getting dished out at all events.
I’ve broken down all metro systems into simple buckets by the status of their individual civil packages: https://themetrorailguy.com/metro-rail-projects-in-india/
A – Roughly 480 kms (one of the buckets)
B – No more than 25 km (quick estimation based on current tendering activity)
C – No more than 25 km (quick estimation based on current tendering activity)
This doesn’t include RRTS figures. Even with that, there’s no way we’re at 1k under construction routes.
Hi Mate,
Calling it ‘misleading’ is an understatement; it’s a blatant lie.
What a third-rate pathetic bureaucratic system we have in our country; that you can’t take the words of a Secretary of Govt. of India on face-value. You need to scrutinize them, only to find that they lie (a lot).
Btw, this gentleman is on the board of directors of a lot of metro organizations in the country. Check these:

…& he is a liar; …really makes one feel pity and cringe about these Babus.
Btw, the mainstream media hasn’t verified the details either; just towed the line and spread incorrect info.

Prime Minister said ‘work in progress on over 1000km’…& this Durga Mishra chap goes a step further to claim 1016km under construction…
