PM Modi Launches Surat Metro & Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 Projects

Moments ago, India’s Prime Minister remotely inaugurated construction work on Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2, at an event held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, and on Surat Metro’s Phase 1 at an event held at Diamond Bourse Dream City.

Both new projects are being executed by Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) with 750 V DC Third Rail electrification. Official deadlines have not been announced.

Ahmedabad Metro’s Phase 2 is 28.25 km long and comprises of two elevated corridors as an extension of the Phase 1’s 18.522 km Line-2 (Red Line), northwards from Motera Cricket Stadium towards GNLU and onward to Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. At GNLU Station, a short 5.42 km spur line will connect to GIFT City across the Sabarmati River.

The Phase 2 project was approved by India’s Central Government’s Cabinet on February 19, 2019 and is estimated to cost Rs. 5384 crore. It will be partly financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a 82.434 million Japanese Yen (approx. Rs. 4,300 crore) loan.

Contracts for its construction were awarded to Ranjit Buildcon (6.478 km Package C2) and Afcons Infrastructure (14.36 km Package C1) in Q4 2020. A tender notice for a new depot at Infocity and its final 8.2 km section, between Sector-10A and Mahatma Mandir, is pending.

So far roughly 6 km out of 39.259 km in Phase 1 has become operational due to a host of reasons, so Ahmedabad has now joined Bangalore (2015-2017) in becoming the only cities where two phases have or are being developed simultaneously.

PM modi in his inaugural speech said that government have received approved Ahmedabad-dholera monorail. So I think TOI information is correct.

State government’s approval? It’s possible but I haven’t seen any official confirmation such as a press release, notice or tweet. Let me know if you or someone else reading this does.

      They’re aiming for August 15, 2022.

At least 10 trains have arrived at Gyaspur Depot, but trains haven’t been able to venture out. The viaduct right outside of it at Vejalpur is incomplete due to land acquisition issues, as you might know.

Shouldn’t we consider gandhinagar and GIFT city as a separate zone(cities ofc) like noida ncr gurugram type thing so it makes U/C if surat 22nd then to 24th ?? Or we will go with Ahmedabad as the main brach here??

I like to count by ‘system’ and not by city or town. Otherwise things will get hairy pretty soon. 🙂

For example, Delhi Metro serves a bunch of suburbs including small non-descript towns like Loni, Ballabhgarh. Keeping a track of all those will not be fun. Serves no purpose either.

Bade Babu of MoHUA says “..1,016 km of Metro Network & RRTS is under construction..”..
    https://twitter.com/Secretary_MoHUA/status/1351113742902317056

..Is that a correct statement TMRG (by any stretch of measurement)?

    ‘Approved’ length has no meaning…

    will the count reach 1016km for A + B + C ?
    A – ‘under construction’
B – ‘already awarded, awaiting construction to commence’
C – ‘already tendered, pending award’

Let’s scrutinize authenticity of the statement of this chap Durga Mishra..
