Bids Invited for Chennai Metro PH2’s CMBT – Puzhuthivakkam Section
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) today invited tenders (bids) for the construction of a 12.431 km viaduct and 12 elevated stations (Package C5-ECV-02) between CMBT – Puzhuthivakkam on Chennai Metro’s new 47 km Line-5 which will connect Madhavaram and Sholinganallur through 48 stations.
This is so far the 12th tender notice for civil work on the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project and 4th for Line-5. It consists of 2 disjointed sections on either side of the double-decker Package C4-ECV-01 (Power House – Porur) for which Larsen & Toubro emerged as the lowest bidder in December 2020.
The two sections and other infrastructure within this package include:
- CMBT to Alwartiru Nagar (approx. 3.2 km) with 3 stations at Grain Market, Sai Nagar Bus Stop, Elango Nagar Bus Stop
- Porur Junction to Puzhuthivakkam (approx. 9 km) with 9 stations at Mugalivakkam, DLF IT SEZ, Sathya Nagar, CTC, BUTT Road, Alandur, Adambakkam, Vanuvampet and Puzhuthivakkam
- Integrated grade separator (flyover) from Mugalivakkam to MIOT Hospital
- Underpass at Vanuvampet
The inclusion of an integrated grade separator indicates that the Mugalivakkam – CTC section (approx. 2.5 km) of Line-5 could possibly be a double-decker viaduct for vehicles and metro trains, like the local one at Vadapalani or the one that just opened in Nagpur.
Tender No.: CMRL/PHASE II/CORRIDOR 5/C5-ECV-02
- Completion Period: 36 months (3 years)
- Pre-Bid Meeting: 12.03.2021 at 11.00 hrs

I see all station mentioned except St Thomas mount. Is it done purposefully?
Porur Junction to Puzhuthivakkam (approx. 9 km) with 9 stations at Mugalivakkam, DLF IT SEZ, Sathya Nagar, CTC, BUTT Road, Alandur, Adambakkam, Vanuvampet and Puzhuthivakkam
yes it is most probably bcos the stretch from st thomas mount to adambakkam in this line..will fall on the same path of that of the yet to be constructed 500m stretch of mrts line.. i had read that cmrl wanted to construct this stretch and merge both the corridors of metro and mrts in a single alignment.
As per the information I read,
Phase 1, phase 2 can’t share the track as they have different signalling system.
Then how the station work missed out?
Also as per the information, MRTS proposed CMRL works between st. thomas mount and Adambakkam (500m) in the common alignment as double decker
yea i meant to say line 5 of phase 2 and mrts stretch in a single pier arrangement as a double deck structure
so this wwork will be issued in a separate tender i guess
I see all station mentioned except St Thomas mount. Is it done purposefully?
Good catch. Looking at the chainage mentioned in the scope, they’ve deliberately left out a couple items, so I imagine STM will be part of a separate package.
Here’s some guess-work:
Ch: 16178 m to 19296 m [CMBT to Alwartiru Nagar: confirmed]
[3.66 km Alwartiru – Porur section of ECV-01 package fits in here]
Ch:22962 m to 30199 m [Porur Junction to Alandur)
[979m gap – I think viaduct north of Alandur at Kathipara (cantilever design?) fits in here]
Ch: 31178m to 31241 m [Alandur to STM]
[416m gap – I think St Thomas Mount station and railway crossing fits in here]
Ch: 31657 m to 33710 m [STM to Puzhuthivakkam]
As per the drawing of cmbt to puzhuthivakkam stretch. It is mentioned that after new phase 2 alandur metro station , the new line meets with the existing phase 1 line. And the existing corridor between alandur station and st Thomas metro station is converted to phase 2 corridor. After that the phase 2 corridor is continued with the existing st Thomas mount station.
Even in the drawing , apart from st Thomas Mount station every other station is mentioned.
So the existing green line (central to st Thomas Mount) ends with Alandur junction/take up the Airport line (Not sure).
Well spotted! I’m going to cover this interesting development in a separate post this weekend.

I don’t see anything from Poonamallee to Central , parrys which have maximum people travling .
CMRL need to think this too.
you need to exchange at vadapalani to go to central that should be shortest route for Poonamalle to Vadapalani (new elevated section) and Vadapalani to Central (Green line)
This stretch from CMBT to Puzhudivakkam, for this Tender :CMRL/PHASE II/CORRIDOR 5/C5-ECV-02 awarded to which company, as per earlier notification Technical bid opening date was mentioned as 28.05.2021. Until today no where one could see the outcome.
Technical bid opening is now on June 29
