ITD Cem Wins Chennai Metro Line-4’s Underground Work

ITD Cementation India Ltd. today emerged as the lowest bidder for the civil construction & tunneling contracts of Chennai Metro Line-4’s 10 km underground packages UG-01 and UG-02 connecting Power House Ramp – Light House Station.

CMRL had invited tenders for both these packages of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project in February 2021 with a 48 month deadline financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) through a $780 million (approx. Rs. 5890 crore) loan.

Technical bids were opened in August to reveal 6 firms had submitted a total of 10 bids. CMRL’s estimates for both are unknown, so if someone is aware just leave a comment below or shoot me a message from the Contact page.

Package UG-01

This 5.15 km section with twin tunnels connects Bharathidasan Road Station to Light House Station through 5 stations. This package includes the construction of four of them at Bharathidasan Road, Alwarpet, Kutchery Road and Light House.

Construction of Thirumayilai Station (interchange of Line-3 and Line-4) will be carried out through Line-3’s Package UG-04, which was won by Larsen & Toubro. A station planned at Foreshore Road is no longer in the works.

Like other Phase 2 packages, CMRL’s estimate for both packages are also unknown, so I can’t provide an assessment on how ITD Cem’s bid is placed and what the next steps look like.

If this doesn’t get retendered, then the likely contractors for all packages of the 26.09 km Line-4 (Poonamallee – Light House) are now known:

Lots of proposals for towns like Mangalore and Hubli, but nothing concrete. Those places could do with a bus based system.

The numbers are somewhat lesser compared to similar distance (tunneling + station contract) of line 3. Should be awarded without any issues. Your views TMRG?
