HCC-KEC Casts Chennai Metro Line-4’s 1st U-Girder
HCC – KEC JV (Hindustan Construction Company Ltd. – KEC International Consortium) last week completed casting the 1st U-girder for Chennai Metro Line-4’s 7.945 km Package C4-ECV-02 connecting Porur – Poonamallee Bypass.
The first girder is 27.90 meters long and weighs 164 MT. HCC – KEC JV’s casting yard in Poonamallee will eventually consist of four casting bays from where I estimate approximately 600 girders, ranging from 18m to 28m, will be cast.
Elevated C4-ECV-02 section of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project was awarded in May 2021 with a Rs 1,147 crore contract value and 36 month deadline.
Besides constructing the viaduct from chainage 17982.240 to chainage 25928.186 and Poonamallee depot-line, HCC – KEC will build 9 stations at Chennai bypass crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumanan Chavadi, Karayan Chavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus, Poonamallee Bypass.

Hey The Metro Rail Guy,1) What Happened to the bids for rolling stock for chennai metro phase 2, 202 coaches? 2)Why they did not select the bidder for chennai metro phase 2, line 3, elevated section is there any reasons? 3)When will they award the contract for Madhavaram depot construction ?.Thanks for responding.
Hi,
1) Technical bids are currently scheduled to open Jan 31
2) Design change took place for the northern section, so they scrapped and re-invited bids. Current technical bid opening is Feb 8.
3) Contract was awarded Dec 6 – I’ve now added an update:

Thanks Metro Rail Guy,But chennai metro rail did not award contract for line 5 underground section,so how will trains run from Madhavaram to shollinganallur run, when the southern section is ready first but this underground section takes time. so will the southern section of line 5 will be abandoned for a while or they will run trains without depot when construction is not finished in underground section of line 5.Hope you understood the question. Thanks for replying.
You’ve got it. No depot = no commercial operations.
It’s too early to speculate what’s going to happen, but if such a scenario arises (which it likely will), then CMRL will have trains pass through the tunnels in the morning, run operations on the southern-side, and have the trains return back in the night.
Thanks for replying The Metro Rail Guy,The Tamilnadu chief Minister said the detailed project report for extension from airport to kilambakkam is under consideration.1)So is the detailed project report submitted to tamilnadu government?
2)If yes, then will this route be given budget on this financial year 2022 or in the next year 2023.
3)I heard from news that the project cost is around 3500 crores, how can they predict the cost without the detailed project report of this route.
Thanks for replying the Metro Rail guy
In a recent news article it was stated that there is a crossover in porur between corridor 4 and 5 and that trains could run from the depot of corridor 4.
For line 3 elevated section 1 was cancelled due to the alignment comes along with the proposed 4 flyovers at omr. So in order to combine these two, cmrl had to cancel the previous tender and make a new one.
Thanks Samuel Abhisheik
Hey tmrg! HCC KEC are working on Full speed in both corridor 5 and 4. But l&t is a bit slow as they are still boring the piles. And still haven’t erected any pillar after porur area. Keeping this in mind, will they complete before the 3 yr deadline??
Yes
Hey tmrg! Heard that elevated corridor 3 alignment has changed for the construction of elevated corridor for 19kms parallel to metro line. This was approved recently. So take look bro!
Where it is ?
Yeah, that’s why the northern section’s tender was scrapped and re-invited
TMRG, if possible can you make a post on the giant machines used by CMRL’s contractors. The scope of phase 2 is unlike any other project and the long UG section in particular will be matched only by MM3. I am interested in seeing some of the machines used.
Great observation on work being on MM3’s scale. The machines you’re seeing all around Chennai are piling rigs. Different types are in use:

What is crossover in metro rail?
