L&T’s TBM Shakti Passes Tests for Rishikesh – Karnaprayag Rail Line
Herrenknecht AG on Tuesday completed factory acceptance tests (FAT) on Larsen & Toubro’s first tunnel boring machine, TBM Shakti (S-1309A), for the 125 km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag railway line project’s Package 4.
This new railway line by RVNL will link both towns in Uttarakhand through 12 stations. L&T was awarded a Rs. 3337.60 crore contract for Package 4 in January 2021 to build the section from chainage 47.360 to 63.118.
Package 4 includes 14.577-km up-line and 13.123-km down-line tunnels, out of which 10.490 km and 10.317 km will be constructed using 2 Herrenknecht Hard Rock TBMs with diameters of 9.1 meters. Also included in the scope are a 240m embankment for Devprayag Station, a 300m embankment at Janasu and one minor bridge.
TUMAS India Pvt. Ltd. – Altinok Musavirlik Muhenislik A.S (JV) is Package 4’s detailed design consultant (DDC). Some snaps via Rahul Sharma:
L&T is chasing a 60 month completion deadline. Per their old press release, this will be the biggest TBM to be deployed in the Himalayan region, and the TBM bored tunnel length of 20.807 km will be the longest for any project in the Himalayan region.
Back in January, Herrenknecht completed factory tests on L&T’s first TBM (Marsu) for the 1000 MW Pakal Dul Hydroelectric Project in Jammu & Kashmir – see details and snaps here.

So does L&T usually makes their TBM themselves or Are they new in building TBMs ??
And if L&T enters into TBM building, Can we say that India wont have to import TBMs in future ??
Any thoughts ??
This TBM was built in Germany and not by L&T.
You don’t get it. It is the ability test and they passed. In the days and years to come they will be able to build with cooperation.
This TBM is made by HK just L&T conducted the FAT.
These TBMs are generally hired for projects and not owned by these project companies. Once the job is done they are reused and modified for other projects with different soil specifications.
Good & Great job L&T, keep going
RVNL e-book; page 41-43 for description of Rishikesh – Karnaprayag New BG Rail Link Project
125.20 km long railway alignment will have 12 new stations, some of which will be partly inside the tunnels. 105.40 km (84%) of the alignment will pass through 17 tunnels, longest of which is 15.10km long. There will be 17 major bridges, 4 on the river Ganga/Alaknanda.
– Total Length of tunnels (kms) = 105.47
– Escape tunnel (Kms) = 98.54
– Total Length of tunnelling involved (kms) = 218
Great find – thanks for sharing!
Good info on TBM, good to see European machine not other cheap cost one. With L&T being the contractor project will be completed with high quality and on time.
