Trials Begin on Ahmedabad Metro’s North-South Line to Jivraj

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) on late-Friday night launched train trial runs (testing) on Ahmedabad Metro Phase 1’s 18.522 km north-south line.

GMRC’s team operated a Hyundai Rotem at 5 kmph out of Gypaspur Depot to Jivraj Station and back – a distance of 2.58 km one-way. Their primary goal was to check for Schedule of Dimensions (SOD) clearances and observe the train’s interaction with the civil structure to ensure there are no physical obstructions along the way.

The Gyaspur Depot – Shreyas section was constructed by IL&FS Engineering through a Rs. 374.64 crore contract awarded back in December 2015. Besides constructing the viaduct, for which heavy land acquisition was required, IL&FS’ scope included 4 stations at APMC, Jivraj, Rajiv Nagar and Shreyas.

This the first time a metro train has run in the western half of the city. Until now, GMRC’s Hyundai Rotem trains for this corridor were lined up and gathering dust at Gyaspur Depot waiting for civil (and later systems) work to be completed by IL&FS which ran into financial difficulties in 2018-19.

GMRC hopes to complete and start operations on the entire 39.26 km Phase 1 project by August 2022, but that seems far-fetched. There’s just far too much civil, system and finishing works pending throughout.

I feel that would be pressurised to start some sections though as election is around the corner. They may operate between limited number of stations like they did while inaugurating the line between Vastral to Apparel Park. At that time only originating and Apparel Park stations were ready.

I’m not sure what GMRC’s game plan is. Shreyas Station has a track cross-over, so might see APMC – Shreyas opening first.

The bridge in the north south corridor over the railway tracks near ranip is still far from completed, even pillars are not in place. Don’t see NS corridor running before Q2 2023

February 2022 – pillars are not there to connect track to the bridge over Sabarmati station.

May 2022 – not only pillars erected but train also reached motera

When they want to do it they do it
