August 30, 2022 Update: CMRL has issued LOA and awarded Siemens with a contract valued at Rs. 349,43,72,377.00 (Rs. 349.43 crore).

May 22, 2022 Original Post:

Siemens Ltd. on Wednesday emerged as the lowest bidder for the OHE electrification contract of Chennai Metro’s 26.09 km Line-4 which will connect Light House – Poonamallee Bypass through 30 stations.

The scope of this Chennai Metro Phase 2 system contract includes design & installation work at the 16 km elevated section (Poonamallee Bypass – Power House Ramp), 10 km underground section (Power House Ramp – Light House), and also inside Poonamallee Depot where the line’s 26 trains will be maintained.

CMRL invited tenders for it in August 2021 with a 1600 day (4.4 year) completion deadline and an unknown estimate. Technical bids were opened in February to reveal 7 bidders.

Note: Bids were submitted in a combination of INR + USD + EURO. Values shown below are INR equivalent.

Like other Phase 2 packages, CMRL’s estimate for this is unknown, so I can’t provide an assessment on how Siemens’ bid is placed and what the next steps look like.

So far only 1 systems contract for Line-4 has been awarded. That was to IRCON International for its end-to-end track work. Alstom last month was the lowest bidder for its 78 coach contract but a LOA is yet to be issued.

This will be a blessing not only for the Chennai citizens but also truckers who are restricted to enter the Harbour during day time. It will also reduce traffic pressure on the Poonthamalli High road which is one of the trunk roads of Chennai. Almost all the Chennai Bangalore traffic hits poonthamalli to exit or enter the city. Excellent project.

We need a massive underground tunnel system

Imagine if there’s a tunnel from koyambedu to parrys, koyambedu to madhavaram, koyambedu to vandalur, koyambedu to muttukadu,

    With toll fee of Rs.1000
    Because it’s expensive to manage

All Govt Public transports, Police, Ambulance, Govt convoy, emergency services like Ambulance, Fire, can use the tunnel for free

Handicapped people can take pass with 50% discount

Business, companies can pay and get pass for their logistics

And most importantly somehow we have to create a reverse channel from sea to create water routes as well

This will make chennai a truly best place to live
