All Turnouts Cast for Bangalore Metro’s Whitefield Extension

Texmaco Rail and Engineering last week celebrated casting all 24 track turnouts for Bangalore Metro’s 15.257 km Reach 1A & Reach 1B (Baiyyappanahalli – Whitefield) extension of the Purple Line.

These turnouts will enable the system’s BEML trains (and in the future CRRC-Titagarh trains) to guide from one track line to another when this extension opens up in 2023.

Casting work had started in October 2021. The final turnout was cast inside the under construction Kadugodi Depot. On the main-line, crossovers with 2 turnouts each are located at:

  1. P169 – P172 – Garudacharpalya Station
  2. P402 – P404 – Pattandur Agrahara Station (earlier known as ITPL Station)
  3. P406 – P409 – Pattandur Agrahara Station (earlier known as ITPL Station)
  4. P471 – P474 – Channasandra Station (earlier known as Ujjval Vidyalaya Station)
  5. P487 – P489 – Channasandra Station to Whitefield Station
  6. P496 – P499 – Whitefield Station
  7. P499 – P502 – Whitefield Station

Track plinth casting works for this extension had started in January 2021, and per BMRCL’s latest August 2022 newsletter 27,760 / 34,325m had been completed as of July 31, 2022.

ITD Cementation India had launched Reach 1B’s final segment in November 2020. The only major gap on the Whitefield extension’s viaduct is on Reach 1A between Benniganahalli (Tin Factory) and Byappanahalli where land acquisition hurdles and design changes had put work on hold.

Twitter follower Sandeep VK recently shared a cool drone view from that section – check it out here where steel girders will be placed. At this time, I see trial runs commencing no sooner than Q1 2023.

Is this section going to be impacted by rolling stock issues as well or do they have enough coaches for the purple line extension?

this is not a 2-3 km extension that they can work without extra coaches. This extension is huge and they will surely need more coaches but they don’t have any.

BMRCL’s struggle for rakes on all lines is so disappointing. I don’t think CRRC-Titagarh rakes will be ready to facilitate opening in time or the opening will be delayed till rakes are available.
In any case we will suffer. Either we will have reduced frequency and increased demand for some time or we will have to wait longer to get metro to Whitefield

The government thru BMRCL can think of utilising the metro lines between 12 midnight to 5 am for the movement of cargo from city outskirts in to the heart of the city like KR market and Kempegowda station
This can reduce trucks entering the city and so also the vehicular pollution and so also utilising the unused capacity of the metro

Good idea. Not sure about the feasibility, some study has to be done to assess the usage metro for purposes other than for passengers.
Metro should extend the time in the night and start little early in the morning with less frequency, there are many passengers who arrive late night or leave early by buses/trains or work late night. It will benefit them and network will also be utilizes more.

If precaatinf work is finished, then I assume installing them should not take more than two months . Can we expect trial runs commencing by the end of this year and actuals by 2013 Q1

    Hi TMRG
How trunouts will be constructed when U girders were used? Since on both side of the U girder there will be walls

    Hi TMRG,
Can you comment on BMRCL’s claim (rather target) of trial run to start by Oct 25th? Several pillars near tin factory remain not connected. It would be practically impossible to connect them in a month or two. Is there a different path that connects to Whitefield?

    Thanks
