Kanpur Metro’s TBM Tatya Records Breakthrough at Nayaganj

Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV’s tunnel boring machine (TBM) S92 today recorded a breakthrough at Nayaganj Station on Package KNPCC-05 of the 32.4 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project.

Nicknamed Tatya after Tatya Tope, this refurbished 6.52m diameter & 120m long Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machine had previously bored and built a portion of Lucknow Metro’s Line-1.

It was commissioned in August 2022 from Bada Chauraha Station for its 1st of 4 drives and travelled roughly 1025m to build the down-line tunnel.

Gulermak – Sam India was awarded 3.62 km Package KNPCC-05’s contract by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in March 2021 with a combined value of Rs. 769.23 crore & USD 3.674 million.

Besides constructing twin tunnels, they’re building 4 station at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj, each 215m long.

With this development, 2 out of 8 breakthroughs for Line-1 have been recorded. Tatya’s sister-machine Nana (S93) had arrived at Nayaganj Station’s retrieval shaft back in December 2022.

Per the tunneling plan, TBM Tatya will now be dismantled and taken to Permat Ramp from where it will excavate 414m towards Chunniganj Station.
