Bids Invited for Kanpur Metro Line-2’s KNPCC-11 Underground Contract

Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) on Tuesday invited tenders for the underground civil construction work of Kanpur Metro’s 8.6 km Line-2 which will connect Rawatpur and Jaurali via 8 stations.

Underground package KNPCC-11 will connect Agriculture Depot with Double Pullia Ramp via 3 underground stations at Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia. I reckon this section with twin tunnels to be approximately 4.08 km long.

This is the 1st of 2 civil packages of the city’s Line-2. The other package from Double Pullia Ramp to Jaurali will involve the construction of an elevated viaduct with 5 stations.

Overall, this is 32.38 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1’s 3rd underground section after Package KNPCC-05 (awarded to Gulermak-SAM JV) and KNPCC-06 (awarded to Afcons-SAM JV), both on 23.785 km Line-1 (IIT – Naubasta).

Package: KNPCC-11

Brief Scope: Design and Construction of TBM Tunnel, Cut and Cover Tunnel, ramp after Double Pullia, ramps in Agriculture Depot for main line and depot connections and three underground metro stations (viz. Rawatpur, Kakadeo and Double Pullia) including Architectural finishes etc. on Corridor-2 of Kanpur MRTS Project at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India india

  • Deadline: 30 months
  • Estimated Cost: Rs. 1025 crore
  • Bid Submission Deadline: April 5 at 3 PM
  • Technical Bid Opening: April 6 at 3 PM

This contract will be financed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a €650 million (approx. Rs. 5661 crore) loan approved in July 2020.

SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) in May 2022 was awarded this line and Agra Metro Line-2’s Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract.

Like Phase 1’s other 2 underground sections, UPMRC will likely require KNPCC-11’s contractor to use at least 2 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for constructing 6 tunnels.

Looking at the tender’s scope, a station at Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture & Technology is no longer in the works. The line’s northern terminal will now be Rawatpur.

While we’re on the topic of underground tunneling, Terratec a few hours ago uploaded this cool video of the tunnel built by Gulermak-SAM’s TBM S93 (Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj).

No idea. If I had to guess, it’s at least 12 months away as the start of comm operations on the elevated section will depend on the completion of tunnels and track-work within at the minimum.

What about technically qualified bidders? As the date of declaration was on 6th April 2023? Any idea?
