Delhi-Meerut RRTS Tunnels’ Track-Bed Concreting Work Begins

With the completion of 3 of 6 tunnels on the 82.15 km Delhi – Meerut RRTS project’s Package 8, contractors for this semi high-speed rail project have moved on to the next stage to facilitate system works.

Afcons Infrastructure last week poured first-stage invert concrete inside the down-line tunnel between Begumpul Ramp and Begumpal Station. This work above the tunnels’ precast segment lining is being done to facilitate track-laying work by Larsen & Toubro as part of Package 17.

National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) had awarded Afcons with Package 8’s Rs. 1529.10 crore contract in November 2020 with a 1310 day (3.6 year) deadline.

They’ve deployed 3 x 7.51m diameter Terratec Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) machines (S88, S89 & S90) to construct six twin tunnels from Brahampuri DN Ramp to Begumpul UP Ramp. Their scope also includes contructing 3 underground stations at Meerut Central, Bhaisali & Begumpul by cut & cover method.

While concrete works are underway on this section, teams from NCRTC, Afcons and L&T are elsewhere conducting joint tunnel surveys to capture tunnel geometry information using reference points for precise track installation.

In case you missed it – Afcons this month recommissioned tunnel boring machine Sudarshan 8.1 (TBM S88) from Bhaisali Station to Begumpul Station for Package 8’s 5th and penultimate drive.
