8 Bidders for Chennai Metro Line-3’s Underground Stations UG-02 & UG-04

8 construction firms (2 in a consortium) have submitted bids to construct 11 underground stations of Chennai’s new 45.81 km Line-3 after Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) opened technical bids today for Packages UG-02 and UG-04.

Line-3 of the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project will connect Madhavaram Milk Colony and SIPCOT via 49 stations. Within that, 29 underground stations will be built between Madhavaram and Taramani Road Junction and connected by tunneling packages TU-01 and TU-02, which were awarded to Tata Projects and Larsen & Toubro in May 2021.

This is a re-tender of Line-3’s underground civil packages. In the first round, DRA Infracon and Larsen & Toubro were declared as the lowest bidders in October 2021 for UG-02 and UG-04 respectively.

CMRL re-invited tenders for both packages’ contract in December 2021 with 4.25 to 4.7 year completion deadlines. They revised the bid submission deadline at least 14 times that I know of.

The bids have now been sent for technical bid evaluation which can take a couple months to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor for each.

Bids for packages UG-01, UG-03 & UG-05 are scheduled to be opened tomorrow, so stay tuned for a list of their bidders! A list of Phase 2’s civil & system packages and their status can be viewed here.
