KEC International Ltd. – Vijay Nirman Company Pvt. Ltd. last week launched the final I-girder for constructing Kochi Metro’s 1.163 km elevated extension from S.N. Junction to Thrippunithura.

This feat for Phase 1B project’s Package KAC-4 was recorded at Thrippunithura Station’s siding-line viaduct using a 26.96m long & 1.6m tall I-girder weighing 60.7 tons.

Kochi Metro Rail Ltd. (KMRL) had awarded KEC-VNC JV with Package KAC-4’s Rs. 162.98 crore contract in July 2020 with a deadline of just 20 months. Piling work began for this small section with 1 new station at Thrippunithura in August 2020.

VNC is co-incidentally the track-work contractor for this small section. With this exciting milestone recorded, I see Kochi’s Phase 1B opening up in Q1 2024, whether Thrippunithura Station is completely ready or not, in the run up to the 2024 General Elections.
