Surat Metro’s Bhesan Depot on Line-2 Starts Taking Shape

With segment launching activity on both packages CS5 & CS6 of Surat Metro’s Line-2 starting in October, here’s a post on the line’s crucial Bhesan Depot (Package DC2) that is quietly shaping up in western Surat.

This train maintenance depot & workshop will support operations on 40.35 km Surat Metro Phase 1 project’s 19.26 km Line-2 which will connect Bhesan – Saroli via 18 elevated stations.

Bhesan Depot’s Rs. 198.93 crore civil construction contract was awarded to Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL) in December 2022 with a 20 month deadline. RVNL went on to subcontract a portion of is work to Holistic Technoengineers for Rs. 77.56 crore.

The facility is being built on a 16.95 acre Surat Municipal Corporation owned parcel and will be connected to the main-line via 10.559 km Package CS5 (Bhesan – Majura Gate) under construction by RBL – DBL JV.

This is where an undisclosed number of Surat Metro’s 3-coach Titagarh trains will be parked (stabled) and maintained from its 72 coach rolling stock contract awarded in June 2023 for both lines of Phase 1. The trains’ final design is yet to be revealed, but I reckon we should see or hear something, even if a preliminary design, by mid-2024.
