Ahmedabad Metro: Narmada Canal Extradosed Bridge’s 1st Segment Launched

Besides the 810m Sabarmati River Bridge, the 28.254 km Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2 project’s viaduct also includes the construction of a 303m long extradosed bridge over Narmada Canal.

Afcons Infrastructure 2 weeks ago celebrated launching their first of 105 precast box segments for its construction, north of Ahmedabad city. This bridge of Phase 2 project’s 14.36 km Package C1 consists of 6 piers. The 2 main completed pylons (P4-14 and P4-15) are 36.5 meters tall and in the future will comprise of 9 stay cables each.

Gujarat’s Chief Minister recently visited the bridge’s construction site located between Narmada Canal Station and Koba Circle Station (view on Google Maps). Here are a couple design schematics from a video shared by DeshGujarat highlighting the visit:

Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) had awarded Afcons with 14.36 km Package C1’s construction contract in Q4 2020. Their scope includes the line’s 8.124 km elevated section from Motera Stadium to GNLU with 8 stations at Koteshwar Road, Vishwakarma College, Tapovan Circle, Narmada Canal, Koba Circle, Juna Koba, Koba Gam, and GNLU.

It also includes the 5.42 km section from GNLU to GIFT City with a bridge over Sabarmati River and 2 stations at Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

Good progress. When do you see the phase 2 starting commercial operations? Is it possible by end of 2024?

At the most trial runs will start in 2024 with operations starting in 2025. Package C3 in Gandhinagar was tendered out later than C1 & C2, so the entire Phase 2 won’t be ready before 2026

Why have they designed a long span over the Canal with cable stays?

Why didn’t they just put piers in the canal? the way NCRTC did for RRTS viaduct going over Upper Ganga canal (gang nahar)..

Is Narmada canal navigable (that the piers would interfere in navigating)?

I think they did this to avoid cutting more trees, if you see on google maps that near Narmada canal there are a-lot of trees and cutting them just to make a new metro line would be not a good idea so they made the metro line in middle of existing road
