Pune Metro’s Swargate – Katraj Extension Approved by Central Government
India’s Central Government’s Cabinet on Friday officially approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of Pune Metro Purple Line‘s 5.46 km extension from Swargate to Katraj.
This entirely underground extension will be implemented under Pune Metro Phase 1 Extension project (Phase 1A) by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL or MahaMetro). It will consist of 3 underground stations at Market Yard (Gultekdi), Saibaba Nagar and Katraj.
The project has an estimated total cost of Rs. 2954.53 crore and comes with an official deadline of February 2029.
Funding Plan
Funding structure for Swargate – Katraj extension was finalized by Maharashtra’s state government on August 8.
- Government of Maharashtra (Equity): Rs. 398 crore
- GOM Interest-Free Loan: Rs. 116 crore
- Pune Municipal Corporation Grant (Land Acquisition): Rs. 181 crore
- Government of India (Equity): Rs. 398 crore
- GOI Interest-Free Loan: Rs. 116 crore
- Institutional Loan: Rs. 1540 crore
Per the government’s PIB release, this extension will integrate with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, which includes the Metro Station, the MSRTC Bus Stand, and the PMPML Bus Stand, providing seamless connectivity for commuters within and outside Pune City.
The new corridor will link various bus stops, railway stations, recreational centers like the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park,Taljaihillock (tekdi), malls, etc., various residential areas, educational institutions, colleges, and major business hubs. It will provide a faster and more economical transport option, benefiting thousands of daily commuters, especially students, small business owners and professionals traveling to offices and business centers.
The projected daily ridership on the Swargate-Katraj Line for the years 2027, 2037, 2047, and 2057 is estimated to be 95,000,1.58 lakh, 1.87 lakh, and 1.97 lakh passengers, respectively.
Back in March 2024, PINI India was awarded a Rs. 6.84 crore contract to provide Detailed Design Consultancy (DDC) services for this extension, and I expect designs for civil construction to be ready in Q4 2024. In May-June, Myrtle Project and Consultancy conducted geotechnical investigation along its route.
With this exciting development, the ball’s now entirely in Maha-Metro’s court and the publishing of a tender notice for construction depends on how quickly they’re able to securing financing from a lender for providing Rs. 1540 crore which represents roughly 52% of the total cost.
At this point I reckon the start of basic ground work is easily at least 12 months away, with the start of tunneling works an additional 12 months away.

Why Ramwadi wagholi metro extension was not taken up by cabinet ? Another 1 year for its approval
Ramwadi-Wagholi extn could’ve been approved at the same time. However it’s better to get work initiated on entirely u/g extension as tunneling and u/g works take lot more time than elevated sections. Pray that Ramwadi-Wagholi and Vanaz-Chandni Chowk extns are approved together within this financial year
I travel from Swargate to Katraj every day using the existing BRTS route, and have seen some work going on already. Preliminary ground works have been started since about a month ago. I think it’s only soil testing so far as there are numerous points where they are drilling holes in the ground.
