L&T’s Delhi Metro TBM-1 Records Breakthrough at Chhatarpur Mandir

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today celebrated tunnel boring machine (TBM) DZ1122’s breakthrough at Chhatarpur Mandir Station of Delhi Metro’s 23.622 km Golden Line (Line-10) which will connect Aerocity – Tughalakabad via 15 stations.

This was TBM-1 (DZ1122)’s second breakthrough and overall the third breakthrough for Delhi Metro Phase 4 project’s 6.51 km Package DC-09 connecting Kishangarh – Saket G Block.

DZ1122 is a CRCHI Earth Pressure Balance machine. For its first assignment which ended in November 2023, it had built a 1267m tunnel from Chattarpur Station to Kishangarh Station in 8 months.

The machine was then brought back to Chattarpur Station’s eastern-end and re-commissioned in January 2024 towards Chhatarpur Mandir Station – covering a distance of 865 meters over the past roughly 7 months.

DZ1122 built 618 rings (1 ring = 1.4m) at an average depth of 15m. Notably the machine passed under the Yellow Line’s viaduct just south of the existing Chattarpur Station (view satellite imagery on Google Maps).

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had awarded L&T with Package DC-09’s Rs. 1428 crore contract in March 2022 with a 42 month deadline.

Their 6.51 km section, with twin-tunnels in the middle of the Golden Line, will connect Kishangarh Station (chainage 5356.285) with a cut and cover ramp (chainage 11867.000) west of Saket G Block Station. It includes 4 stations at Chhattarpur (interchange with Yellow Line), Chhattarpur Mandir, IGNOU and Neb Sarai.

DZ1122 is one of L&T’s four TBMs working Package DC-09 between Kishangarh – Saket Ramp. It was the first of 11 machines for the Golden Line’s 3 underground civil packages to be commissioned in March 2023.

This was the third of 10 breakthroughs planned in Package DC-09. L&T’s TBM-2 (DZ1123) working on the parallel tunnel was recommissioned a few weeks after TBM DZ1122. I haven’t heard of any major issues being encountered, so we should expect it to arrive at Chhatarpur Mandir Station by September-end.

L&T’s other 2 TBMs (DZ1124 and DZ1125) are currently tunneling from Chhatarpur Mandir Station to IGNOU Station. I’ll add their progress data here when available.

Seeing the pace of construction, one can easily predict that this corridor is not going to open before 2027 any way. So, better forget the deadlines of remaining 2 approved corridors ie., 2029. Cause they would take another 5 years.
And DMRC says, Phase 4 is Running on time!

That’s correct – there’s at least another 3 years to go for the 1st section of the line (eastern-side) to open.
