Panasonic – Pioneer JV Awarded Chennai Metro Phase 2’s Platform Screen Door Contract

The winner of another old contract is now known. Back in June, Panasonic Manufacturing (Beijing) Co. Ltd. – Pioneer Fil-Med Pvt. Ltd. JV was awarded Chennai Metro Line-3 & Line-5’s Platform Screen Door contract (Package ASA11) by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL).

Both these under construction lines of 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project will run in a north-south orientation to connect Madhavaram – SIPCOT (45.4 km Line-3) and Madhavaram – Sholinganallur (44.6 km Line-5) with a mix of elevated & underground stations.

The scope of Package ASA11 includes installing full height PSDs at Line-3’s 29 underground stations between Madhavaram Depot Station and Tharamani Station, and at Line-5’s 5 underground stations between Kolathur Junction Station and Nathamuni Station (Villivakkam MTH Road).

Final Contract Value: INR 85,36,03,003 + USD 7,392,013 (approx. INR 146,95,66,140.67 or 146.95 crore)

CMRL had invited bids for this contract in September 2023 with a 1465 day deadline. Technical bids were opened on January 31 to reveal 2 bidders: Panasonic – Pioneer JV and ST Engineering Urban Solutions. Their financial bids were opened on April 8 to reveal Panasonic – Pioneer JV as the lowest bidder.

Brief Scope: Design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing & commissioning of Platform Screen Doors for Corridor-3 (Madhavaram Depot to Tharamani Metro) and Corridor-5 (Kolathur Junction Metro to Villivakkam MTH Road Metro) of CMRL Phase-II.

Besides preventing suicides and accidents due to passenger movement, these PSDs will greatly help CMRL to reduce maintenance costs in the underground stations by improving the quality of the environment, resulting in lower air-conditioning and ventilation costs.

The 29 underground stations of Line-3 are under construction by DRA – Soma JV (Package UG-01), Tata Projects Ltd. (Package UG-02) and Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (Packages UG-03 to UG-05). The 5 underground stations of Line-5 are under construction by Tata Projects Ltd. (Package UG-06)

CMRL has another 2 packages for installing platform screen doors:

Package ASA12A: PSDs at 10 elevated stations of Line-3 (Sholinganallur Lake – SIPCOT 2) and 29 elevated stations of Line-5 Grain Market – Elcot) – Awarded to ST Engineering Urban Solutions Ltd. in November 2023.

Package ASA09: PSDs at 10 elevated stations of Line-3 (Nehru Nagar – Sholinganallur) and 10 elevated stations of Line-5 (Assissi Nagar – Koyambedu) – Technical bid evaluation is underway since February 2024.
