11 Bidders for Mumbai Metro Line-11’s Geotechnical Contract
Eleven firms (coincidentally) have bid for conducting geotechnical soil investigation for 18 km Mumbai Metro Line-11 (Green Line) which will connect Anik Bus Depot – SPM Chowk via 15 underground stations.
Mumbai’s underground Line-11 by Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRC) was redesigned with a new alignment earlier year. When built, it will be Mumbai city’s third underground line after Line-3 (Aqua Line) & Line-7A (Red Line).
The objective of this geotechnical investigation is to have sufficient data on the sub-soil to assist with preparing detailed design of structures, and use appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction. This will also help ensure least possible damage to existing structures during the construction phase.
MMRC had invited bids for this contract in early August with a 90 day deadline. Technical bids were opened by MMRC on Friday.

MMRC’s Brief Scope: Geotechnical Investigation works for revised alignment of Mumbai Metro Line 11
Here’s a copy of Line-11’s revised alignment. 15 underground stations are planned to be built at Anik Bus Depot, Wadala Depot, CGS Colony, Ganesh Nagar, BPT Hospital, Sewri, Hay Bunder, Coal Bunder (Darukhana), Reay Road, Byculla, Nagpada Junction, Bhendi Bazaar, Crawford Market, CSMT Metro (interchange with Line-3 / Aqua Line), Horniman Circle, and SPM Circle.
The bids have now been sent for technical evaluation which for a small-value contract like this will take no more than a month to complete. When that is done, the financial bids of the technically qualified bidders will be opened to reveal who’s the lowest bidder and most likely contractor.
Per the tender notice, boreholes of 150mm should be spaced at regular intervals of 500 meters along the twin tunnel’s alignment with 3 boreholes required at each station’s site area. These boreholes will be dug up to a depth of 10m, between 10-20m, and beyond 20m per the consultant borehole plan.
The assigned geotechnical contractor will need to submit the following in their final report:
- Bore hole details and locations with georeferenced co-ordinates.
- Area geology and related characteristics
- Water table levels
- Test results
- Bore hole wise foundation recommendations
- Cutoff value
- Soil bearing capacities
- Seismicity
As shared in the past, this investigation is one of the several steps MMRC has to take prior to construction which I envision will not start until at least 2027 – and that’s on the optimistic side of the spectrum.
Other necessary steps including securing financing, preparing detailed designs, appointing a General Consultant, appointing consultants for EIA, SIA & rehabilitation, and conducting the civil tendering process.

Much needed connectivity on the harbour side. But hopefully it materialises soon. But why the realignment ? The redevelopment of Mbpt land not coming up soon ?
Very good news
