Bids Invited for Pune Metro Swargate – Katraj Line’s Underground Work

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro or MMRCL) today invited tenders (bids) for the civil construction contract of Pune Metro Purple Line‘s 5.46 km extension from Swargate to Katraj.

This underground extension with twin tunnels will be implemented under Pune Metro Phase 1 Extension project (Phase 1A) and consist of 3 underground stations at Market Yard (Gultekdi), Padmavati (Saibaba Nagar) and Katraj.

PINI India was awarded its Rs. 6.84 crore Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract in March 2024, and the project was approved by India’s Central Government in August 2024 with an estimated cost of Rs. 2954.53 crore and deadline of February 2029.

This exciting development indicates Maha-Metro is in advanced talks with a lender for providing a loan to fund the line’s construction & systems procurement. When the line was approved the government’s PIB release indicated a Rs. 1540 crore loan (52% of total cost) would be required.

Maha-Metro today posted a basic tender notice for its contract and tender documents are not yet available for download despite the notice saying they’ll be available from 4 PM.

Tender Details

  • Contract Duration: 42 months (3.5 years)
  • Pre-bid Meeting: October 22, 2024 at 11 AM
  • Bid Submission Deadline: December 3, 2024 at 4 PM
  • Technical Bid Opening: December 4, 2024 at 4:30 PM

Tender Number: P1A-UGC/2024 (ICB)

Maha-Metro’s Brief Scope: Design and Construction of Underground Stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, Katraj and Associated Tunnels at North South Corridor of Pune Metro Rail Project.

Swargate – Katraj section will function as a natural extension of Phase 1’s 3.3 km District Court – Swargate section which was just inaugurated by India’s Prime Minister on Sunday.

Once the tender documents are available I’ll adjust my Phase 1A map with the exact location of all 3 stations. MMRCL will most likely require the assigned contractor to deploy two tunnel boring machines (TBMs).

If things go according to the tender’s prescribed schedule which it rarely does, then we should see a contractor getting assigned in Q2 2025 with tunneling work starting in Q2 2026.
