Thane Metro’s Geotechnical Work Begins on Waghbil Road

Renuka Consultants this week officially started geotechnical sub-soil investigation work at Hiranandani Estate for the 29 km Thane Metro project which will loop around Thane city with 20 elevated & 2 underground stations.

This exciting development comes a few days after Thane Metro’s foundation stone was unveiled by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The results from Renuka’s investigation for Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro or MMRCL) will help finalize the alignment of Thane Metro’s ring line with greater precision.

Additionally, the results will be included within the civil construction tender documents to help infrastructure companies make more informed financial bids and use appropriate machinery, methods & technology during construction.

Here are a few snaps of Renuka’s first investigation tripod posted by Thane Metro’s new social media account on X (check them out and do follow). The site is located next to Vijay Orovia Phase 1 towers in Hiranandani Estate off of Waghbil Road (view on Google Maps).

Thane Metro project was approved by the Central Government’s cabinet in August 2024 with an estimated cost of Rs. 12,200 crore.

Besides creating a new X handle, Maha-Metro has also revamped their website and posted Thane Metro’s new logo. I’m not sure what the colors represent, but if I had to guess the brown represents bark from the trees at Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) and blue represents Ulhas River.

And here’s a new refreshing map of Thane Metro which I’ll share in posts going forward:

Thane Metro will loop around Thane city and comprise of a 26 km elevated route with 20 stations and a 3 km underground twin tunnel section with 2 underground stations. The line will have passenger interchange facilities to Mumbai Metro’s 32.32 km Line-4 (Green Line), 24.9 km Line-5 (Orange Line), and the Central Railways’ Thane Station.

Back in September, STUP Consultants was declared as lowest bidder for the line’s first Detailed Design Consultant (DDC) contract covering 6 stations at Dr. Kashinath Ghanekar Natyagraha, Manpada, Dongripada, Vijay Nagari, Waghbil and Waterfront.

With the fast pace Thane Metro project is now progressing at, I expect the first civil tender notice for station works to be published in Q2 2025. Prior to that we should see a tender notice for the construction of an elevated viaduct connecting these stations by the end of 2024 since Maha-Metro likes to break civil work into 2 separate packages for viaduct & station works.

Check out the map – 3 interchanges are planned with Mumbai Metro. Looking at the existing setup, users will have to go through security again and use a separate ticket. By having different implementation agencies they’ve made a real mess out of it.
