Pune Metro’s Phase 2 Approved by Maharashtra Government

Maharashtra Government’s Cabinet today approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of 31.64 km Pune Metro Phase 2 project with an estimated total cost of Rs. 9,897.19 crore.

This exciting development comes less than 2 weeks after Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (Maha-Metro or MMRCL) invited bids to appoint Pune Metro Phase 2’s General Consultant to assist with the project’s implementation.

Pune Metro Phase 2’s approved lines, both elevated, include 25.518 km Line-5 connecting Khadakwasla – Swargate – Hadapsar – Kharadi via 22 elevated stations. The other approved line, Line-5’s 6.118 km spur, will connect Nal Stop – Warje – Manik Bagh via 6 elevated stations.

Line-5 (shown in Red below) is estimated to cost Rs. 8131.81 crore, while its spur (shown in Green below) is estimated to cost Rs. 1765.38 crore.

Line-5’s Station Names: Khadakwasla, Dalvewadi, Nanded City, Dhayari Phata, Manik Baug, Hingane Chowk, Rajaram Bridge, Deshpande Udyan, Dandekar Pul, Swargate North, Seven Loves Chowk, PCB, Race Couse, Fatima Nagar, Ramtekdi, Hadapsar, Magarpatta South, Magarpatta Main, Magarpatta North, Hadapsar Railway Station, Sainath Nagar and Kharadi Chowk

Line-5 Spur’s Station Names: Paud Phata, Karve Putla, Dhunkar Colony, Karve Nagar, Warje and Daulat Nagar

With this development, the DPR will be now sent to the Central Government for its approval. It will go through the departments of several ministries such as the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and Ministry of Finance (MoF) prior to being recommended for final approval by the Central Government’s Cabinet.

Unlike other metros around India, Maha-Metro interestingly handled the approval process for Pune Metro’s Phase 1 Extension (Phase 1A) in a piecemeal manner. The 4 routes within it, connecting Bhakti Shakti (Nigdi), Katraj, Chandni Chowk & Wagholi, went through separate approval processes & timelines to get approved through the food chain.

As such I’m inclined to believe we’ll see additional lines getting eventually added to Phase 2’s execution plans such as the 11.35 km Hadapsar – Loni Kalbhor and 5.57 km Hadapsar – Sasvad Road lines which are included in Phase 2 General Consultant’s scope of work. The DPRs for both those lines are currently awaiting Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)’s approval.

Will the lines operate as they are being built i.e Khadalwasla to Kharadi ?

With so many branches at Hadapsar ( lines going to kharadi, loni kalbhor and saswad) the section between swargate and hadapsar will become bottle neck if all metro train have to traverse this section. Instead they should have one line (east- west) from khadakwasla to loni kalbhor and anotther north south saswad to kharadi.

They are going to extend line 3 (Hinjewadi-civil court ) towards either Loni kalbhor or saswad road passing through Dr. Babasaheb ambedkar chowk near railway station then Indira Gandhi chowk and last running parallel with khadakwasla-kharadi line (This post) Via Military contonment till Hadapsar…….I THINK MAHA METRO IS ALSO HAVING THE SAME DOUBT AS YOU N ME TO WHERE EXTEND THIS LINE 😅😅

Saswad and Loni just ain’t in the plan. Trains are gonna go straight through Hadapsar on the Kharadi – Khadakwasla line

Connecting the metro to Nagar Road via the Kharadi IT area would be more effective than relying on the feeder bus service, especially if it doesn’t save time for employees, who may otherwise opt to use their own vehicles. Currently, the plan connects it to Bypass Chowk. With an employee count of around 1-2 lakh and growing, this becomes even more important.

Its very obvious to have a line from nigdi to chakan which is heavily using road traffic as there are no means for rail or anyother. Why is bhosari nigdi chakan not considered for metro

Hinjewadi-Civil Court line will also run till Hadapsar, pray that they extend it to Loni Kalbhor and Saswad respectively. It’s unknown whether Line3 extension will share tracks with Line5 or whether they will run parallely on separate set of lines. Operations will be quite sophisticated on line 5…
