HCC – KEC JV Launches Chennai Metro Line-4 ECV-02’s Final U-Girder
Hindustan Construction Company – KEC International (HCC – KEC JV) last week celebrated launching all 624 U-girders for Package C4-ECV02 of Chennai Metro’s Line-4 which will connect Light House – Poonamallee Bypass.
This major package-level milestone was recorded at the upcoming Kumananchavadi Metro Station’s piers SP-04 and SP-05, and marks the completion of launching all 3202 precast elements like U-girders, pier arms, portal beams and pier caps earmarked for this section. This includes the launch of 2 Open Web Girders (OWGs) across the Tambaram – Maduravoyal Bypass.
7.945 km Package ECV-02 is located on the western-end of 26.1 km Line-4 and connects Poonamallee Bypass – Porur via 9 elevated stations. It was the first civil package of the 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project where barricading for construction work started in Nazarethpettai in May 2021.
HCC – KEC JV had finished casting all elements in June 2024 at their yard located in Kolappancheri (view on Google Maps).

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) had awarded HCC – KEC JV with Package ECV-02’s Rs. 1007.95 crore contract in May 2021 with a 36 month construction deadline. Besides a 7.945 km viaduct for the main-line primarily consisting of U-girders, it includes a viaduct to Poonamallee Depot where 26 Alstom train-sets will be stabled & maintained.
The 9 stations within this package are located at Chennai Bypass Crossing, Ramachandra Hospital, Iyyapanthangal Bus Depot, Katupakkam, Kumananchavadi, Karayanchavadi, Mullai Thottam, Poonamallee Bus Terminus and Poonamallee Bypass

Package ECV-02 is in the most advanced stage of construction and will be the first section of the Phase 2 project to open, which I reckon would happen no sooner than Q1 2026.
CMRL has so far received two Alstom train-sets for Line-4 at Poonamallee Depot from Sri City, while track-work for the down-line has been completed on a small 2 km section between Mullaithottam and Poonamallee Depot where testing (trial runs) one of using Alstom’s trains is expected to begin within 2 months. CMRL 2 weeks ago ran a trolley down the tracks with its management on board – see video on X.
