Maharashtra Govt Approves Mumbai Metro’s Line-5 and Line-6
On October 24, the Maharashtra government’s cabinet headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis approved the detailed project reports for two new elevated metro lines in the city’s northern suburbs. This includes the 23.50 km Line-5 connecting Thane – Bhiwandi – Kalyan and the 14.47 km Line-6 between Swami Samarth Nagar (Lokhandwala Complex) – Jogeshwari – Kanjurmarg – Vikhroli.
The DPRs for both projects were prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and were approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in October 2016. Both lines have been designed to run a maximum of 6 coaches.

Summary –
• Line-5 (shown in Lime Green below) has been estimated to cost Rs. 8,240 crore and will consist of 16 stations at Kalyan APMC, Kalyan Station, Sahajanand Chowk, Durgadi Fort, Kon Gaon, Gove Gaon MIDC, Rajnouli Village, Temghar, Oswal Wadi, Ganesh Nagar, Anjur Phata, Purna, Kalher, Kasheli, Balkumbh Naka and Kapurbawdi. The depot’s location hasn’t been revealed.
• Line-6 (shown in Brown below) has been estimated to cost Rs. 6672 crore and will consist of 13 stations at Swami Samarth Nagar, Adarsh Nagar, Jogeshwari(W), JVLR, Shyam Nagar, Maha Kali Caves, SEEPZ Village, Saki Vihar Road, Ram Baug, Powai Lake, IIT Powai, Kanjurmarg (W), Vikhroli-EEH. The line’s depot will come up at Kanjurmarg.
The government hasn’t disclosed how they’ll fund these lines or provided a list of interested banks/organizations willing to provide a development loan, but expects civil work to start in 2018 and optimistically open both lines by March 2021 – which is not possible to achieve.
If the development of Line-2 & Line-7 is anything to go by, then they won’t utilize central government funds (effectively bypassing the new Metro Rail Policy‘s requirements) and will commence civil work utilizing city-state funds while arranging for additional funds via a loan to fund the acquisition of systems such as rolling stock, signalling and telecommunications.

I don’t have any other details on it. This is in fact the first instance of a new Line-11 being mentioned in publicly available official docs.

where would line 6(swami samarth-vikhroli) have interchange with line 3(SEEPZ-colaba).The SEEPZ station is some distance away from JVLR while the Aarey depot too is some distance away from JVLR.(shown in your maps as well as official govt. web sites).Hope govt. doesn’t expect commuters to walk for changing trains.
As per MMRDA’s PIU Google Earth file, it’s proposed to come up in front of SEEPZ’s Gate 3. If they stick with it, then users would have to walk 300-400 meters to switch to Line-3. That is a little long, but not too bad.
If you look at the recent tragedy of Elphinstone road, crowd management(lack of it) can topple the best network.300-400 meters walk by thousands of people from the elevated line 6 to underground line 3, add to that the hundreds of hawkers that will appear(this fact cannot be changed, considering the Indian conditions-the design has to circumvent the hawkers not police), we have a tragedy waiting to happen.Though i read somewhere that possibly the Aarey depot will be connected to the line 6-but again it would be few hundred meters away.I wonder what stops the govt from choosing to extend line 3 till kanjur.Lack of land at kanjur cannot be the reason.If there is no land keep the depot at Aarey but extend the line to kanjur.They can(1) continue the depot at aarey,the depot need not be in the last stop, the trains can come from kanjur to array for resting/maintainance in night.(2)else shift the seepz station nearer to JVLR or(3)shift the Aaray station nearer to JVLR.
Hi TMRG, quite interesting news. But one thing that I fail to understand is that how the govt does not extent the west east metro lines further to Navi Mumbai? For example Line 1 VAG can be sent towards Sanpada Turbhe while Line 6 from Swami Samarth to Vikhroli can be extended to Ghansoli Mahape or Kopar Khairaine.
I hope the govt gets more connections from Western Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. It will help commuters from both these places.
That would be desirable, but not possible on Line-1. Whoever prepared (and approved) Ghatkopar Station’s design back in 2006-07 ensured that the line cannot easily be extended eastward. Take a look at it on google maps and see how the line ends at the station building. What a travesty.
I’m hoping Line-6 will have an open-ended design to allow for an easy extension.
I think it is more political and not based on transport decision.my observation is that the govt. does not want to integrate Mumbai with Navi Mumbai-they have kept the toll plaza,previously octroi etc.Extending the line 6 to Reliance park in Navi mumbai is the easiest thing and even a 7 year old child when he sees the map will agree, but not our planners.Infact they should also join goregaon-mulund to airoli by metro,sewri to uran,line 2 B from mankhurd to vashi and beyond.Any sensible planner will integrate both the cities,if the decision is based on purely economic angle, make the thane creek irrelevant by making several bridges-road/metro etc-cost does not matter-helps people in Navi mumbaikars access the jobs/facilities of Mumbai and helps Mumbai grow and Mumbaikars move out of the congestion of Mumbai.

With this line constructed and operational Andheri become hub for metro. There will be 5 Mumbai metro route running in Andheri area.

Is Metro line 6 really possible? From the infiniti signal to JVLR the path is full of obstacles. Even if these obstacles are cleared, the JVLR -Oshiwara bridge which is partially built stands in the way. What’s the proposal to navigate the metro through this bridge.
This project seems most unnecessary when Andheri residents already has Metro 1 which roughly covers the same territory. Thane and Navi Mumbai are the areas where the metros should be extended and prioritized.
