CMRL Publishes Official Phase 2 Map of Chennai Metro Project

So last month, Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) published nine separate notices inviting bids from companies for the appointment of detailed design consultants (DDC) and geotechical engineering firms as part of the pre-construction activities for developing a 50 km portion of Chennai Metro’s new Line-3 and Line-5 under the 108 km Phase 2 project.

Within one of those notices, CMRL has published an official map of the project – the first to ever be released by the organization – which will comprise of 3 new lines with 104 stations:

Chennai Metro Phase 2 map – Source: CMRL

Update: New updated 2020 map can be viewed here.

Here’s a list of all proposed stations. Note that these 3 lines provide interchange connectivity with not just one another but also with the 54 km Phase-1’s Line-1 (Airport – Wimco Nagar) & Line-2 (St. Thomas Mount – Central), something which will be unique to Chennai if these get built as-is.

• Line-3 (shown in Green) Madhavaram – SIPCOT (45.81 km) with 50 stations at Madhavaram Milk Colony (interchange with Line-5), Thapal Petti, Murari Hospitial, Moolakadai, Sembiyam, Perambur Market, Perambus Metro, Ayanavaram, Otteri, Pattalam, Perambur Barracks Road, Purasaiwakkam High Road, Kelley’s, KMC (interchange with Line-2), Chetpet Metro, Sterling Road Junction, Nungambakkam, Gemini, Thousand Lights (interchange with Line-1), Royapettah Govt Hospital, Radhakrishnan Salai Junction, Thirumayilai Metro (interchange with Line-4), Madaiveli, Greenways Road Metro, Adyar Junction, Adyar Depot, Indira Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani Link Road, Nehru Nagar, Kandhanchavadi, Perungudi, Thoralpakkam, Mettukuppam, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkiyam Thoralpakkam, Sholinganallur (interchange with Line-5), Sholinganallur Lake, Sri Ponniamman Temple, Sathyabama University, St Joseph College, Seemancheri, Gandhi Nagar, Nayalur, Siruseri, Sipcot 1 and Sipcot 2.

• Line-4 (shown in Navy Blue) – CMBT – Lighthouse (17.12 km) with 20 stations at Light House, Forehore Estate Road, Kutchery Road, Thirumayilai Metro (interchange with Line-3), Alwarpet, Bhararthidasan Road, Adyar Gate Junction, Nandanam (interchange with Line-1), Natesan Park, Panagal Park, Kodambakkam Metro, Meenakshi College, Power House, Vadapalani, Avichi School, Elango Nagar, Sai Nagar, Grain Market and CMBT (interchange with Line-2 and Line-5).

Note – A supplementary DPR for a 15 km extension of Line-4 to Poonamallee is currently being prepared, which will increase Phase 2’s route length to 123 km.

• Line-5 (shown in Red) –  Madhavaram – Sholinganallur (44.66 km) with 46 stations at Madhavaram Milk Colony (interchange with Line-3), Venugopal Nagar, Assissi Nagar, Manjambakkam, Velmurugan Nagar, MMBT, Shastri Nagar, Terreri, Kolathur, Srinivasa Nagar, Villivakkam Metro, Villivakkam Bus Terminus, Nadhamuni, Anna Nagar Depot, Thirumangalam, Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar, Kallamman Koli Street, CMBT (interchange with Line-2, Line-4), Kannlamman Nagar, Nerkundram, Madhuravoyal, Ganga Nagar, Valasaravakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Suresh Nagar, Ramapuram, Sathya Nagar, Chennai Trade Centre, Butt Road, Alandur (interchange with Line-1 and Line-2), St Thomas Mount (interchange with Line-2), Adambakkam MRTS, Vanuvampet, Puzhuthivakkam, Madipakkam Koot Road, Kilkattalai, Echangadu, Kovilabakkam, Vellakkal, Medavakkam Koot Road, Medavakkam Junction, Perumbakkam, Global Hospitals, Elcot and Sholinganallur (interchange with Line-3).

Station Information

Also within the three DDC notices are the following tables which list out the approximate distance between each station, type (elevated versus underground) and their basic layout (island versus side platforms). Each and every figure can possibly change by the time detailed designs are prepared and civil construction bids are invited, but these can be taken as a good benchmark.

Note – the scope of the tender notices were restricted to an approximately 50 km portion of Line-3 and Line-5 covering 60 stations, so data is missing for the rest 44 stations spread across all 3 new lines.

Line-3 Station Info

• Underground: Mahavaram Milk Colony – Taramani Road Junction (approx. 25.718 km)
• Elevated – Taramani Road Junction – Sholinganallur Lake (approx. 10.571 km)

Line-5 Station Info

• Underground/At-Grade: Madhavaram Milk Colony – Venugopal Nagar (approx .87 km)
• Elevated: Venugopal Nagar – Shastri Nagar (approx 5.276 km)
• Underground: Shastri Nagar – CMBT (approx 10.039 km)

All elevated stations have been designed to be 140 meters long, and as such can accommodate a max of 6-coach trains. CMRL might be attempting to follow DMRC’s Phase 3 strategy of saving money by reducing station footprint and will make up for it by operating trains at a high frequency to maintain roughly the same passengers per hour per direction (pphpd) capacity as a system with 8-coach trains.

Phase 2’s Current Status

As stated earlier, Phase 2 has been estimated to cost Rs. 85,000 crore and its detailed project report (DPR) is currently being revised to conform with the new Metro Rail Policy of 2017 after which it’ll be placed before the central government’s cabinet for approval. RITES submitted their environmental impact assessment (EIA) report to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in November 2017, but there’s still no clarity on whether they will provide another loan or not.

    Hi TMRG,

When NCC and Simplex Infrastructure will start station design. Still we couldn’t see any improvement in viaduct for both the contractor. Pile construction for SIL contractor is too slow, which leads to heavy traffic in Thiruvottiyur high road. How long will take to construct viaduct and station for the Phase 1 Extenstion.

One more good thing about this phase also is that there are numerous interchanges with suburban stations also (Chetpet, Kodambakkam, Perambur, Adambakkam MRTS)

Medavakkam koot road to medavakkam junction is already contructing going in flyover. This plan is wrong. St. Thomas continue to pallikaranai
Side to veerathamman koil main to connect perumbakkam. This route easy to construct and control traffic.

Also the stretch from Vellakkal up to Medavakkam koot road, needs clearance from Forest department. The existing Mount Medavakkam road widening project has been stalled for years due to this. The alternative will be to take left after Eechangadu junction along with Pallavaram Thoraipakkam Radial road and connect to Pallikkaranai along with Velachey main road till Medavakkam and further to Sholinganallur as per existing plan.

Plan is correct. It is easy to build metro near flyover as done in many placee. When these metro will stary opetation in over 6 years, huge traffic will be here….best plan to connect medavakkam koot root , medavakkam jn to sholinganallur

    Hi TMRG,

The station spacing at certain places is around 650m. Is this normal ? I thought typically stations were spaced at 1km intervals. Do other cities have such close spaced stations ?

600-700m station distance is good and other metros across world have such models. Based on my experience, it is very commuter friendly to have such model.

      Reply
    • Nirmal says:

I have the same question. Such less distance between stations will drastically increase the commute time. MSB to TBM is big success because it doesn’t have so many stations. But VLCY to MSB has so many stations and the total commute time much higher.

I hope Corridor-5 is a good stretch covers thick populated areas. If Southern Railways plan to have a stop at St.Thomas Mount then the station is a very viable one for the down south passengers. St.Thomas Mount station become a busy junction/hub since caters EMU,CMRL, MRTS & Southern Railways.

but still misses out porur, which is the most thickly populated in that surroundings, it seems there will be some changes as CM has said that poonamalle to light house via porur will be added in phase 2 so may be another corridor will be added with some modifications .

    1. Why prefer underground route when elevated ones are faster to implement with less cost? This shall also in effect reduce fares.
    2. Cost of line 3 (Madhavaram to Siruseri) can be further reduced by integrating the route with current mrts from park station to tiruvanmiyur which is elevated anyways.. conversion of mrts to metro line will help lot of execution problem like land acquisition and traffic woes

Affordability cost of the people for transport should be taken in to account or consideration
Metro take the volvo bus rate as competitors for trafi and it is for upper middle class not for middle class salary person
As a Building designer Architect my opinion is a Massive transport system should run full on week day and medium traffic on week end But Chennai Metro is Running empty on all week day and medium traffic on week end (it is being used as tourist or entertainment spot on week end by family and not for transport system)
what is the use of constructing the building with out user this will turn in to Ghost building
    A Massice Transport
MRTS is running successfully if it is extended till Siruseri or mahabalipuram then it help to reduce the Major traffic in the OMR
Currently most of the CMRL station is running in loss
Unless the trafi is reduced the CMRL will soon become Gost Building in the Chennai City
CMRL is ultimate wastage of Public money & Space

    Dear Sirs,
Two things are important for the people of Kotturpuram, Kotturgardens and Kottur.
    1. Presently no govt seems to be interested in completing the St.Thomas Mount to Velachery MRTS link.
2.The “Island called Kottur” which served Anna University and many other important places nearby with a huge population must be linked by the CMRL using the “Kotturpuram railway station area” as a hub. Please have an underground or over ground station at the old “Kottur Concrete Batching plant” area to serve the people reach up to Sholinganallur and beyond. The route must be modified as Light House, Mandaveli, Greenways Road, Kottur, Shastrinagar, Indira Nagar, Adyar depot, Tiruvanmiyur and the rest of the planned route of CMRL.
Please do this change immediately to the make the proposed route equitable to all tax payers. Kottur is serving a very large population in Chennai comprising all professions and is still growing. Having a station at Adyar junction is a waste of money as first of all there is no space to build and also the junction is already served by many other systems by the Metro Busses.
Therefore please take into consideration our immediate requirement. Thank you very much.

If that is the case, then why have CMRL issued Land Aquisition notice to residents in Adyar junction near Aavin park?
Is there any change in the plan?

what about pallavaram , chrompet , tambaram , perungalathur , it is very thick populated area depending bus if you want to improve your collection do this first, mind you in british period they prefered meterguage electric train by this route only and also one thing all chennai population catching outstation buses from perungalathur why don’t you considered this it may be very valuable thing for this side population it is very simple low budget if you extend tirusulam to perungalathur one more thing you kindly check the mtc bus collection of this route to deside

With just so many stations say if I a commute from chetpet to Siruseri that is close to 30 plus stations . 1.Would there be a possibility of few stations having extra lines other than two

    2. From Sipcot to Thiruvanmiyur could they have three lines instead of two

3.I suspect during traffic hours on weekdays there is not enough capacity in metro trains to commute people . Even assuming say there is a train every 3 mins . In 60 mins with just 20 trains assuming 200 capacity, this is just 4000 people .

    4. Suburban and MRTS with indian railway like suburban trains only scales

it is just 40000 people and not 4000 (for point #3.). WOuld be nice if a possibility of 3 lines is also considered where the third line is a fast lane which just connects at say important stations say Siruseri , Sholinganallur, Thiruvanmiyur, thirumayilai so that IT workers like me who are in siruseri take a fast train. Having so many stations is a disadvantage too when we have to travel from city to siruseri.

We are living near to proposed Nadhamuni metro railway station. We want to know which way the under ground tunnel will pass through. We heard that the line cannot pass under Padi flyover and it would pass under the open ground by the side of Padi flyover and few houses where measured and marked for this. Is that true.

My research along with statistics shows that the first route which needs priority Rail infrastructure is from Tambaram – Velachery/Sholingnallur – Thiruvanmyur route. I cannot understand why simple calculation is not understood by Government. I have interviewed 39,980 people and the result I am posting is on the basis of some well applied statistical analysis.People plying on this route are in dire necessity of rail along this route.

Sir chinmaya Nagar between sai Nagar and Koyambedu is a thickly populated area and why the planners have missed it. As the roads were expanded recently large areas are available near chinmaya Nagar bus stand. If they build a station at chinmaya Nagar it will be very helpful for us.

We already have quite a lot number of buses with wide spread roads and frequent trains in this area. I guess this is more than suffice. There’ll be lot to loose for people because of metro. I guess this is fair enough. If metro comes in between that is in the middle of the GST Road it may work out. But the available transport is okay for Pallavaram chrompet tambaram areas with the new bridge being constructed in Pallavaram the traffic will be very much reduced.
