Pune Metro Line 3’s 1st Pier Takes Shape in Hinjewadi
Workers from Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. earlier this month started tying rebar at multiple sites to construct piers (pillars) for Pune Metro’s 23.3 km Line-3 which will connect Megapolis Circle in Hinjawadi with Civil Court in Shivajinagar.
The city’s new Line-3 with 23 elevated stations is being developed by PMRDA on PPP mode through a 35 year concession agreement signed with Tata’s TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (TRIL UTPL + SPVG).
Tata Projects Ltd (TPL) is responsible for the line’s civil construction work while Siemens will provide project management, turnkey electrification, signaling, communications and depot works (equipment). The original deadline for the project was March 2023 which has since been revised to March 2025.
Rebar for 3 piers are now visible in Hinjawadi, while 1 pier has appeared opposite E-Square near Pune University where a double-decker viaduct is proposed.
Here are some snaps via YouTuber Devesh Shah who has also uploaded a video here.
Next steps: More rebar will be used to tie the existing rebar horizontally (see example). Once done, formwork (see example) will be brought in to facilitate a concrete pour and mold the skeletal framework into the desired shape.
Piling work for the line’s construction started in November 2020 – see snaps. Per Devesh, another piling rig has now arrived in Baner near Green Park Hotel.

Is the civil work being done by Tata Projects?
Yes you are right
Thanks, TMRG for a detailed report which nicely covers the project status.
I would suggest the below updations so that it conveys the correct information about the Project –

Thanks – have made suitable edits!
Great information.
Would be really very happy to see the work gettinf speeeded up.
Soon Work from Home for IT (mostly all companies in Hinjewadi are IT) might end and then again there will be traffic problems again
So if work on the hinjewadi section is completed as fast as possible it will really help everyone a lot and employees of the comoanies wont have issue while travelling
True that. Even with currently low traffic are the roads not equipped to handle the traffic experienced along the barricaded median during evening and night time. Hopefully Tata will get the work done in time, or use some buffer period to get it done. What’s update on land acquisition, has it been completed
Yes you are right. Wherever such infra projects are undertaken there is a stress on road traffic during the construction period due to barricading and construction activities.
However, on this project special care has been taken by Tata Group. A traffic study has been conducted in association with IIT/Bombay and based upon their suggestions various route diversions have been planned near the likely congested crossings over the entire alignment. One would have noticed – a large-scale work of road widening from Helipad Circle to Wakad Chowk is under progress (60% already completed). This is done to ensure that even after barricading at least two lanes are made available to the road users to avoid congestion.
One would also notice the environmentally friendly design of barricading boards, which has a large concrete base and a top steel plate. After the work is completed the concrete potion will be moved towards the median of the road to serve as road dividers with plantations in between the concrete portions. This saves wastage of concrete portion of barricading boards and reduces stress on the environment. This is also the safest type of barricading board and will never topple on the road during construction thereby ensuring safety of the road users at all times besides ensuring safety to the workers inside the barricading board.
On this project, Land acquisition is the responsibility of PMRDA and they have acquired and handed over 99% of land to the Project and within next 6 months balance land parcels will also get handed over.
Tata group is committed to deliver the Project within 40 months starting from 25th Nov 2021.
“PPP mode through a 35 year concession agreement” what is this means.
PPP = Public Private Partnership wherein there is a Concessionaire who puts in money to build infrastracture like a full fledge Metro System and government provides land and staturory permissions. Concessionaire is allowed to run this Metro for 35 years on mutually agreed profit sharing basis. After 35 years the assets are transferred to the Govt. This is a win win situation wherein the Concessionaire gets to earn on his investment and the government gets an infrastructre buit for the public without investing money upfront
