Kanpur Metro’s 1st TBM Breakthrough Recorded at Nayaganj

Gulermak – Sam India Builtwell JV on Tuesday celebrated their tunnel boring machine (TBM) S93 recording its first tunnel breakthrough at Nayaganj Station’s site on Package KNPCC-05 of the 32.4 km Kanpur Metro Phase 1 project.

This 6.52m diameter and 120m long Terratec TBM, nicknamed Nana after Nana Saheb Peshwa, was commissioned from Bada Chauraha Station in July 2022 and travelled 1025m to build the up-line tunnel.

Gulermak – Sam India was awarded 3.619 km Package KNPCC-05’s contract by Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) in March 2021 with a combined value of Rs. 769.23 crore & USD 3.674 million.

Besides constructing twin tunnels, they’re building 4 station at Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha and Nayaganj, each 215m long.

Per the tunneling plan, TBM Nana will now be dismantled and taken to Permat Ramp from where it will excavate 414m towards Chunniganj Station.

I hear Kanpur Metro’s 2nd TBM (S92 nicknamed Tatya) working on the down-line tunnel since August 2022 has excavated more than 700 meters. I’m expecting it to arrive at Nayaganj Station in early 2023.
