Chennai Metro Plans Parandur Airport Metro Line via Sriperumbudur

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to extend Chennai Metro’s Line-4 from Poonamallee Bypass to Parandur Airport with multiple stations within the upcoming airport’s boundary, per Economic Times.

Chennai’s 26.1 km Line-4 connecting Light House to Poonamallee Bypass is currently under construction as part of the 116.1 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project. A consultant was appointed in April 2023 by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) to explore the feasibility of extending the line to Sriperumbudur, which I estimate would be anywhere from 15-17 km long.

The state government has now decided to extend the line all the way to Chennai’s new greenfield airport in Parandur for which land acquisition of over 3700 acres and master plan design works are underway. I estimate the route from Poonamallee Bypass to Parandur will be roughly 40 km long, less than half of what (93 km) the Economic Times reported.

Here’s my purely fictitious take on how its alignment running primarily along NH-48 may look like. There’s a possibility of it also running along the under construction 260 km Bangalore – Chennai Expressway between Sunguvarchatram and Parandur.

Stations between Poonamallee – Parandur are planned to be spaced 7-10 km apart, which to me is too high given the urban development expected to take place in the region. Stations on Bangalore Metro’s Blue Line, popularly known as Airport Line in Phase 2B, are spaced 3-5 km apart which is apt.

CMRL plans to procure trains capable of operating at higher speeds than regular metro trains, which usually have a design speed of 90 kmph. Multiple stations are expected within Parandur Airport where an aerocity with commercial, retail & hotel developments are planned, similar to the ones in Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

CMRL’s consultant plans to prepare an initial feasibility report by April 2024 suggesting the line’s alignment, estimated cost, projected ridership, station locations and numbers.

There’s a long, long way to go for Parandur Airport’s land acquisition to be completed, its masterplan is finalized and construction work begins, so I don’t see construction on the metro line to it starting anytime prior to 2028 which itself will need to go through the regular motions of Detailed Project Report (DPR) creation, approvals and financing.

I wish they add a station to kanchipuram from parandur(like how Delhi airport line ends in dwarka). It’s less than 5 kms Max and will help add to the footfall.

KANCHEEPURAM HAD NOT BEEN GIVEN IMPORTANCE. BIRTH PLACE OF ANNA DURAI. TEMPLE CITY. ATLEAST METRO SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO KANCHEEPURAM FOR FAST DEVELOPMENT. CHENNAI CITY ALREADY COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE GROWING POPULATION. LET CHENNAI RETAIN ITS NATURAL Vegetation. STOP ISSUING PERMIT FOR FORMATION NEW NAGARS/PLOTS, NEW FORMATION OF Dwelling PLACE IN CHENNAI. ALLOW NEW CONSTRUCTION IN KANCHEEPURAM DISTRICT. DEVELOP KANCHEEPURAM AS A DEVELOPING ADJOINING DISTRICT EQUIVALENT TO CHENNAI.

Yes with the Metro extended to Kancheepuram , it can really develop well as a satellite town and decongest Chennai.
Similarly Siruseri line to be extended to Mamallapuram and eventually to Puducherry

Very true, it’s better to extend upto Kanchipuram mainly to reduce the traffic coming into Chennai.
Sriperumbudur has already started making news with the new startup companies to support the MNCs and good infrastructure development, in addition to Metro Train facility surely Sriperumbudur will be an excellent alternative for those who are planning to invest in and around Chennai and GST

I absolutely agree with you madam, probably the longest route in India if it gets started. But the old historical religious city congested, planning it to pass through inside will have to distrub ancient important areas. Other wise we have adjust with it outskirts of kanjeevaram

Further, Kanchipuram Railway station is to be linked with Cheyyar on the line of Dindivanam to Chittor line by SR so that people from south can easily reach the Airport.

It is a good idea as no train route in sriperumpudur area…Better metro to avoid the tambaram kilambaram route as there is a ordinary train line..It is enough… Please finish the kilambakkam railway station asap..

Hey tmrg. Happy new year. Btw the 93km that times reported is not only for airport line like you mentioned. Its all 3 line extension. I.e line 4 from poonamalle to parandur 50kms, line 5 from KOYAMBEDU to avadi 17km, line 3 siruseri to kilambakkam 26km. But the last line 3 extention is dropped officially from cmrl. Only line 5 extension DFR is completed.

I thought exploring of metro line connectivity till parandur is good move. However first a expressway construction is needed first to create ToD. Then based on this developmental sites cmrl may start up in step up manner bypassing it from different directions from city.
